The origin of Hakata Niwaka is about 300 years ago during the Kanei era.
It is said to have been around the time of Tadayuki Kuroda, a feudal lord. It is said that people in Hakata who loved things gathered on the night of Obon and strolled through the streets wearing paper lanterns with both edges removed over their heads and only their eyes open. When he meets people, he makes jokes and asks mysterious questions to make people laugh. Over time, it became known as ``Ninwaka.''
