となりのトトロの裏テーマ？！
本作の原型となる構想は、宮崎駿が1970年代に日本アニメーション、そしてテレコム・アニメーションフィルムに在籍していたころに書き連ねていたイメージボードに残されている。宮崎によれば、当初は本作品を絵本にするつもりであったという。その後イメージボードと企画書を東京ムービーに提出し、テレビスペシャルなどへの採用を模索していたとされるが、この企画は通っていない[7]。
なお、押井守・鈴木敏夫・川上量生の三者鼎談で押井、鈴木両名の述懐によると、「もともとは人間とトトロ族の戦いの話だった。太古の昔、人間とトトロ族が戦って、トトロ族は負けた。そのなかの生き残り、それが映画では現代の所沢にトトロ族の末裔がひょこっと顔を出した話」という[8]。この物語のプロットは、後に高畑勲原作・監督・脚本の『平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ』に活かされることになる。[要出典]
The original concept for this work is preserved in the image boards that Hayao Miyazaki drew up during his time at Nippon Animation and then Telecom Animation Film in the 1970s. According to Miyazaki, he originally intended to make this work into a picture book. Furthermore, in a three-way discussion between Mamoru Oshii, Toshio Suzuki, and Masao Kawakami, both Oshii and Suzuki recalled, ``Originally, the story was about a battle between humans and the Totoro tribe.In ancient times, humans and the Totoro tribe fought. However, the Totoro tribe lost.In the movie, the Totoro tribe's descendants suddenly appear in modern-day Tokorozawa. The plot of this story would later be used in ``Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko,'' written, directed, and written by Isao Takahata. [Citation required]
