----------------------------
I'm going to Shanghai for work.
I can't write about it yet coz the details haven't been announced yet.
But I guess, it seems so long stay.
The luggage limit for this trip to Shanghai is 30kg.
I've been issued a 90-day visa (This is a long story for getting our visa..), but I won't know if it will be extended until I go there and apply for more.
If I can get the 90 days extended, I won't be back in Japan this year, but if I can't, I'll have to keep working online after the summer.
There are so many things I have to prepare just in case, and I'm fightin' against the weight.
I packed up in the morning and headed for Narita Airport.
The airport was as dystopian as ever, with no people and a shuttered area.
I had to go through the PCR test, so I went to the Narita airport at 11:00 , even though I had an 20:00 flight, because the deadline for submission was around 2:00 p.m.
I met up with a team of assistant directors and went through the tests on my own.
We met up with the assistant director's team and went to the airport for our PCR test.
It seems that what is required for the examination differs from country to country, and in the case of China, a swab is inserted into the nose instead of saliva, and blood is also taken.
I was surprised that the swab was inserted that deeeep into the nose..
Staff told me that there were a lot of people in the group and that the results might not be ready by 2pm, but I can't wait that. When I told them I wanted to hurry up, they said they would try to get the results out by 1pm. In fact, the test room was empty.
By the way, the price was the same even if we hurried, but it was 40,000 JPY per person including the blood draw.
What do you think, Is it a moderate price..?
After finishing the test, I spent some time eating lunch.
In the airport, there were only Chinese, Japanese-ramen, and udon restaurants available..So I decided to go with udon.
After that, I went to pick it up at 13:00. and it was negative without any problem.
The result of the blood test was positive, but this was apparently because I had already taken 2nd shot of the vaccine. The vaccination coupon arrived early in my area, and I was able to make an appointment at a private hospital very early, so I was able to get the 2nd shot.
Although my departure was delayed due to my visa not being issued, this was a blessing in disguise for me.
I hope the vaccine passport will be issued by the time I return to Japan and the quarantine will be reduced, but writing too much about this may encourage discrimination, so I'll leave it at that.
Once I get the documents, I have to upload it to the web and get a QR code. This QR code is to be shown before the flight and at the local airport to prove that I have tested negative without any problems.
The registration process was pretty tedious and took about an hour.. (as was the case when I went to the visa center to get my visa, they unexpectedly asked me for my parents' dates of birth, mmm..).
It was a little past 2:00 p.m. and I was anxious, but I managed to submit my application.
After that, we thought we would have some time to kill, but there were so many things to do before we left that we were all holed up in the airport working.
In the meantime, I got a message from acquaintance, "Is the plane going to fly? I didn't understand what talking about.
I didn't understand the meaning, but when I looked at my phone, I saw that there was a tornado warning..
When I walked outside of rounge, I heard a sound that made me wonder if there was a SPA in the back, and when I looked in, I saw that it wasn't SPA, it is just outside (sooo hard rain), where I finally realized how bad the weather was.
I wondered if this possible to fly..? I just bit upset.
But there was no point in thinking about it.
There are so many "what ifs" involved, like getting a visa, what if I don't get one, and so on. There's nothing I can do about it in this unstable time, so I have to ignore it for a while to move forward.
Then I returned to the airport to make preparations and went to the check-in counter early.
Since the number of direct flights has been reduced and there are only two or three flights a day, there is a long line at the counter.
As I waited, I adjusted my luggage and even picked up my Amazon package at the airport convenience store (so convenient).
But the QR code, which is called a green code, still hadn't changed to green. Without it, I couldn't check in, so I showed my code, which was still yellow, to the staff at the counter and asked them to take care of it. I was told that it usually takes 30 minutes for the code to change, but nothing changed for a long time. The staff contacted the embassy and told me that my passport photo had not been uploaded properly and that they needed to fix it, which they did, but this time it turned red and was completely rejected. When it was time to check in, finally I turned green..
The luggage was still a bit overweight, so I paid the excess baggage charge (we can add more in increments of 5kg, and this time it was about 5000 JPY for 10kg for the two of us), had a bite to eat, and walked past the boarding gate (Everytime we stand at the baggage check and raise their hands looks like characters from an invader game. It was so funny..but it doesn’t matter of this diary, sorry.)
When we were about to board the plane, we found out that we had forgotten to purchase insurance. Normally, I just use the insurance that comes with my credit cards, but since this was a pandemic and a long stay, we decided to take it out, so we registered online just before the flight and finally got it.
I was soaked in work until just before the flight, but managed to get on the plane.
The rain subsided and we were able to depart on time at 20:00, but the weather was still bad and the flight was very bumpy. All the attendants were wearing protective suits. I felt as if I was being escorted as patient.
As usual, it was a turbulent start to the day.
But the day was still a long way from here.
After arriving at Pudong Airport, we got off the plane, registered at the machine, and went back to the remote area for the PCR check. This time, it was the nose and mouth. The nose and mouth were too haaaard. This was nothing compared to Narita Airport.. The nose and mouth was inserted so deeep. Then they took blood.
After that, we finally went to immigration. Normally, I would have my fingerprints taken here, but it was a blessing in disguise that they didn't do that this time due to infection control measures.
After exiting, I went to the reception desk for my area and then headed to the bus stop. On the way to the bus stop, I had to show my green code several times to get past the gates, but all of them were handled by staff in protective gear.
The airport was also cluttered with partitions, probably to prevent infectious diseases, but it had a feel to it, unlike Japanese dystopia.
We loaded our luggage onto the bus and set off for the quarantine hotel that had been assigned to us without knowing where it was.
The front of the bus was separated from the driver's seat, so I couldn't see him.
I can't imagine how hard it must be for the staff. It must be stressful just to wear the protective gear, but I appreciate the way they work all day long. For us, this is a special day, but for them, this is their daily life. When I think about it from their side, I realize how amazing they are.
We arrived at the hotel late at night.
We were taken to a tent in the courtyard of the hotel, where we were briefed on the isolation period. It was a bit like a tutorial for a video game, and the way we listened to the staff in protective gear was like listening to our own work, "Fog Nation" (which was supposed to be performed at the National Theater in Taipei this year, but was cancelled due to the pandemic..).
I paid my hotel bill in advance here. Although I had come here without any exchanging cash, my cards were all out of order, and I couldn't deposit money on wechat pay, so I was in a hurry, but in the end I had made a UnionPay card, a card for China, so I was able to pay with this. I had made this card 2 years ago and hadn't had much use for it, but it helped me out here.
They gave me a cup of noodle soup for midnight dinner, and I got a card key and went inside the hotel. When I looked down the aisle, I saw all the small chairs lined up in a row, and it looked like meals and supplies would be delivered here. I was not used to rationing since I was isolated in an Airbnb last year in Taiwan, so this was a new experience for me.
We said goodbye to the assistant directors and went to each rooms. It was already around 3 a.m.,(4 a.m. in JP time).
It had been about five hours since we arrived at the airport.
I unpacked my luggages to some extent, but fell into my bed.
Midnight, July 12.
By the time I left Japan and arrived at my hotel, the fourth state of emergency would have been declared in Japan. Every time I moved before/after declation.
When I set out on this journey, We found YOUTUBER's video about life in isolation. It was very helpful for us. However, there are few records of stage people in isolation.
So, I'm writing this diary, it will be helpful for someone.
Now, it's time to start living in isolation show again.
Best,
Ney Hasegawa
