Former member of the House of Representatives, Tamotsu Shiiki, convicted of sexual assault against a first-year junior high school girl. "The crime is despicable and malicious; criminal responsibility is serious."
The Tokyo District Court sentenced Tamotsu Shiiki a former member of the House of Representatives, to three years in prison with a five-year suspended sentence for the crime of non-consensual sexual intercourse against a junior high school girl. The presiding judge, Chikako Murata, stated, "This is a despicable and malicious act, and the criminal responsibility is serious."
According to the ruling, Shiiki, 58, assaulted the 12-year-old girl in a karaoke room in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, Tokyo, in August of last year.
The court pointed out that Shiiki approached the girl while she was alone, confirmed her age, and then committed the crime, saying, "The impact on the victim's physical and mental well-being cannot be underestimated." On the other hand, the court noted that he did not abuse his position as a former lawmaker and had also provided compensation to the victim, which resulted in the suspended sentence.
Shiiki was first elected to the House of Representatives in the 2012 election and served two terms.
There has been a flood of criticism on social media regarding the decision to grant a suspended sentence.
