Devastating Damage to Approximately 150,000 Stalks of Specialty White Leeks Due to Wind and Snow

Japan is experiencing extremely cold weather, leading to heavy snowfall across various regions. In the San'in area, snowfall temporarily decreased during the day on the 6th, but heavy snow is expected to return from early morning on the 7th. Currently, in the mountainous areas heavily affected by the snowfall, a vital ingredient for hot pot dishes is suffering significant damage.

The white leeks in the fields have been broken.

D's Planning, which cultivates white leeks in Tottori Prefecture, has around 150,000 stalks planted in a field in Daisen Town, scheduled for harvest around March. However, due to the recent cold wave and strong winds, the leaves of almost all of the leeks have been severely damaged, resulting in a catastrophic situation.

Chihiro Umebayashi, Executive Director of D's Planning, said, "The snow has had some impact, but it's mainly the strong winds, which reached about 17 meters per second, that did most of the damage."

While it is said that being buried in snow can enhance the sweetness of white leeks, the current condition with broken leaves will affect their market price.

To deliver the best possible leeks, the company plans to delay harvesting by about a month from the usual time, hoping to give the leek leaves a chance to recover.

Chihiro Umebayashi, Executive Director of D's Planning, stated, "After the snow melts, we will conduct disinfection and proper management. The harvest might be delayed, but we will do our best to see how much we can salvage. It’s close to being a total loss, but we will find a way."

Thank you.
