Conservative attacks on the embattled U.S. Agency for International Development landed on an unexpected target Wednesday when Elon Musk, right-wing influencers, elected Republicans and the White House zeroed in on subscription money that federal government agencies paid for Politico Pro and other specialty subscription publications aimed at corporations and government entities.

By Wednesday morning, Musk weighed in. Responding to a post that claimed to show that 37 FDA employees paid roughly half a million dollars for Politico Pro subscriptions, Musk wrote, “Not an efficient use of taxpayer funds. This wasteful expenditure will be deleted.”

But that characterization is false, according to a senior executive at Politico who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private internal data. Those payments go to Politico Pro and other professional offerings from the Axel-Springer-owned publisher, which offers some subscriptions and licensing deals that can reach five figures.
