Israel and Hamas are closer to a cease-fire and hostage release deal than at any point since December 2023. That was the headline Israelis woke up to on Monday morning, as talks in Qatar entered a crucial stretch and gaps between the two sides narrowed. As of Monday afternoon (Israel time), a deal seems imminent, but nothing has been finalized yet.

This is why the behavior of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich during these fateful hours deserves special attention – and condemnation. Smotrich, a far-right extremist who has loudly expressed his opposition to a hostage release deal in the past, decided to use the delicate situation in order to try to hurl a wrecking ball into the negotiation room. In a blistering statement, he described the emerging deal as a "catastrophe" for Israel's national security, warning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his Religious Zionism party "won't be part of it."

Fourteen months ago, when Israel and Hamas reached a short-lived cease-fire deal that led to the release of 100 hostages – the vast majority of them women and children – Smotrich made similar noises. His party almost torpedoed that deal, but eventually fell in line and at the very last moment decided to vote in favor. His accomplice in attempting to derail the deal, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, actually voted against it – opposing the safe return to Israel of children as young as 3 from the hands of Hamas.

Did Smotrich learn any lessons from that sad affair? His actions on Monday suggest otherwise. But to fully understand how cynical and manipulative his conduct has been, one must go back to June – the last time a cease-fire and hostage deal was seriously being discussed. Smotrich wrote back then that Israel's war in Gaza was "almost at the end" and, therefore, it would be wrong to make a deal at that time. "Instead, we should crush Hamas," he declared.

Seven months have passed since his promise that Israel's war was on the verge of ending. Many dozens of soldiers had died during that time and at least a dozen hostages murdered by their captors – among them American-Israeli citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin. The war, however, is nowhere near to ending. The Israeli military has lost 50 soldiers in northern Gaza since launching a new operation there in early October. How many soldiers could still die if Israel begins a new operation soon in another part of the Strip, instead of reaching a cease-fire deal and bringing back the hostages?

All of this doesn't mean Smotrich is the only person working to obstruct a deal. He has willing partners among the ranks of Hamas' leadership. But they are enemies and Israel has been fighting them for 15 months now – since Hamas initiated the October 7 massacre. Smotrich is a minister in the Israeli government that badly failed the hostages. It's inexcusable that he's making it harder to bring them back alive to their families.
とはいえ、スモトリッチが合意を妨害しようとしている唯一の人物というわけではない。ハマス指導部の中には協力してくれる人もいる。しかし彼らは敵であり、イスラエルはハマスが10月7日の虐殺を開始して以来、15か月間彼らと戦っている。スモトリッチは人質をひどく失ったイスラエル政府の大臣だ。人質を家族の元に生還させることを困難にしているのは許しがたい。
