Hello! Today I will talk about what I always buy when I go to Japan.
Many Japanese products are of good quality for the price. I feel that the number of things that can only be bought in Japan is decreasing year by year, but whenever I go there, I still find a lot of interesting things to buy.
Let me introduce you to the products that I will definitely buy in Japan and bring back home. If you live outside of Japan, please compare them with what you always buy in Japan. And the people living in Japan may also find it interesting, so please watch to the end.
1.cosmetics
Although I can get similar ones in the United States, I can't ignore them because they sell products that suit Japanese people. Every year, new products are developed, and you will definitely want to pick up something with a pretty package at a low price. Many Japanese products are cute and of good quality. I often feel that the quality is better than the ones overseas at similar price. In fact, I think that this applies to all products, not just cosmetics. Foreigners who come to visit in Japan may agree. Most of the customers in urban drugstores are foreigners. Their shopping baskets are usually pretty full of cosmetics.
I buy lotion and cotton puffs, especially for cosmetics. I definitely buy MUJI cotton puffs. I love organic cotton puffs which are large-sized and high-quality.
I usually buy stock for more than a year of these consumables.
Even though I couldn't go to Japan last year because of Covid-19, I still have a bag of cotton puffs left.
2.MUJI (MUJI is a Japanese retail company which sells a wide variety of household and consumer goods. )
MUJI has locations in the United States and in many overseas countries, but it's still expensive, MUJI is naturally cheaper to buy in Japan. Also, there are some items that are only available in Japan, so I mainly buy those items.
Every year, I buy a large amount of standard items and consumables, such as the cotton puff I mentioned earlier and tooth cleaner wipes. (wipes for tooth cleaning, useful for long road trips when you cannot brush your teeth for a long time). I also buy savory snacks, sweets, kitchen items and underwear. MUJI ready-to-eat instant meals are delicious, aren't they? And MUJI candy and snacks are must-buy items.
I buy as much as I can to the limit of my luggage.
3.OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICINE
Many of the medicines sold in Japan are made with the Japanese body in mind, so I always buy the ones that I have been using since I was a kid. Above all, I will definitely buy Seirogan. Seirogan is pharmaceutical drug marketed in Japan, sold as a treatment for the digestive tract (especially as an antidiarrhoeal). Whenever I had a stomachache, I was always helped by this, so I'm relieved to have it, and I believe there is no comparable alternatives. It is like a security blanket for me. However, one time, I had this in my carry-on baggage, a security screener opened my bag and questioned me profusely about it at security check in Heathrow Airport. Because it has a peculiar smell, actually terribly strong, I worried a lot if it would be confiscated. I explained what it was, then he finally passed me through without any problem. It's an intense smell for those who smell it for the first time, and it may be reasonable for someone to be suspicious. You better put it in check-in baggage, not a carry-on.
Another thing to buy is eye drops. In particular, antibacterial eye drops can only be prescribed by eye doctors in the United States. So I'm really grateful that I can easily buy them at drugstores in Japan. It's a hassle to see an eye doctor just for eye drops. It's definitely a must-buy for me. If I can only bring back one item, then I choose to buy these.
Also, I buy a lot of preservative-free eye drops that are no longer sold at drugstores, or hard to find them in US drug stores. Since I could not go to Japan last year, I'm short of them. I really need preservative-free eye drops for my dry eye! If you find these at any drugstore, tell me!
If I can't go back to Japan this year, I have no choice but to order these online from Japan.
4.Depachika confections
I think the Japanese depachika is really unique. "Depachika" refers to the basement floors of department stores where many kinds of food from prepared delicacies to delicious imported confectionaries are sold. Many Japanese foods are also available here in LA, but it is difficult to get carefully selected foods and regional foods in one place. By the way, what I buy from depachika is mainly sweets:D Many Japanese and Western confectionery stores, and high-quality ones from all over the world are gathered together in one place. It's fun just to see not only Japanese manufacturers but also manufacturers from all over the world. So I never get tired of it. The more I visit, the more I wish I lived down there. When I go to Japan, I visit these many times and buy a lot of sweets from various department stores. After all, sweets are a great souvenir. My husband is most pleased when I bring home sweets.
Snacks from groceries
Sweets/snacks sold at Japanese ordinary groceries. Actually, we can get various Japanese snacks at Japanese groceries here in LA, but It is difficult to get new items and limited editions, so I buy a lot of them in Japan. But It is difficult to get new items and limited editions in general, so I buy a lot of them when I find them. I think Japanese snacks and candies are delicious and good quality for the price.
To tell you the truth, half of my shopping in Japan is sweets and snacks. I can make my childhood dreams come true. I can buy as much as I want, because they are not so expensive.
5.100 yen store(Dollar store)
Recently, Daiso (Japanese one dollar store)has come to the United States, but in the United States, it is actually $1.50. It is simply 1.5 times or more. Besides, there is no 100-yen shop other than Daiso here yet. We don't have Seria or Can-Do (these are also Japanese dollar stores) here yet, so I often visit them in Japan. I look for something unusual or new. What I absolutely buy every time are laundry nets, masking tape, and kitchen utensils. I'm glad that they also have yarn and craft supplies.
When I go to Japan it's usually mid-summer time, so I cannot find so much yarn.(Japanese summer is terribly hot.)
By the way, you might think "Wouldn't you buy yarn in Japanese yarn stores?"
I feel that yarn is a little more expensive in Japan than in the United States. However, Japanese brand yarn I've only seen in Japan, so I definitely buy them, but not a lot.
7.Japanese pottery
I don't buy them every year, but when I go to a sightseeing spot famous for pottery such as Kyoto, I always buy tea cups. It's a little pricey, but I can get simple and unique pottery only here, so I buy them. Unfortunately, even if I use it carefully, I often break them, I am very clumsy. so if I break it, I allow myself to buy them again. It's pretty sad to break something I like, but conversely, I think it's an opportunity to buy a new one, so I use them diligently.
When I go to Japan, I buy a lot of things as long as they fit in my luggage. If you go alone with your child, you can bring four suitcases. On the flight to the destination, bring two in empty and return with all four full. Well, as I said earlier, half of them are full of sweets.
That's most of all what I buy in Japan.
Finally,
If you buy a lot of things at one place (5,000 - 500,000 yen), you can be exempt from sales tax if you are a foreigner. This also applies to Japanese living overseas. It's a bit of a hassle, but be sure to check on and follow the tax exemption procedure. (Of course, you can't open these items and use them while you're in Japan.) Currently, the sales tax in Japan is 10%, so it can add up. I definitely recommend you to get tax exemption.

やっぱり日本の製品は安くて上質なものが多い。日本でしか買えないもの、というのは年々減っている気もしますが、たまに行くと、面白い驚きがあってついついたくさん物を買ってしまいます。
それでは、
私が絶対買って帰る商品をご紹介します。海外に住まわれている皆様は自分が必ず買って帰るものと比べてみてください。また、日本に住んでいる皆さんにとって、意外なものがあるかもしれないので最後までみてくださいね。
1.コスメ用品
これはアメリカでも同じようなものも手に入るのですが、日本人の肌に合った物を売っているという点でやはりはずせないです。毎年、新しい商品の展開もあるし、プチプラでパッケージが可愛いものはどうしても手にとりたくなりますよね。そう、日本の商品って値段の割りに、可愛くて上質なものが多いんです。海外のものと比べても、同じ値段でも質がいい、と感じることが多い。これはコスメに限らず、全ての商品に当てはまると感じます。外国人の方々も同じように考えているのかもしれません。都会のドラッグストアのお客さんの大半が外国人です。彼らの買い物籠の中には、大量の日本のコスメ用品などが入っています。
私が買うのは、中でもコスメ系では、化粧水とコットン。コットンは特に無印良品のものを絶対に買います。オーガニックコットンで大判の質の良いものが売っているので大好きです。前回は買いすぎたかも、来年まで使い切らないかもなー、と思っていたのですが、幸か不幸か、日本に帰れない状況になったにもかかわらず、まだ１パッケージ残っています。
２、無印良品のもの。
無印良品はアメリカにもあるし、多くの海外の国にもあると思いますが、やはり割高なので、当たり前ですが、日本で買うのが一番安いです。あと日本でしか取り扱いのないものもありますのでそういったものを中心に買って帰ります。毎年、定番のもの、消耗品は先ほどお話ししたコットンや歯磨きシートなどを１年分の量を大量に買います。次回日本にくるまで持つ量を買ってます。消耗品以外では、食品、これは無印のお菓子などや下着類。無印のレトルト食品って美味しいですよね。荷物に入れられる分だけ買って帰ります。
３、薬、目薬
薬品はやはり日本人の体を考えて作られているものが多いので、ドラッグストアで売られているもので子供の頃から愛用していたものは必ず、買って帰ります。中でも正露丸は絶対買います。昔ながらの黒い粒々のやつです。お腹が痛くなると必ずこれに助けられていたので持っていて安心で、これに変わる薬は世界中のどこにもないと思っています。（ただ、一度これを手持ちのバッグに入れていたら空港で止められてイギリスの空港で、なんだこれは、と問い詰められたことがあります。独特の匂いがあるので。説明したら問題なく通してくれましたが、没収されたらどうしよう、と泣きそうになりました。初めて見る方にとっては強烈なものですし、怪しいものと間違われるのも無理ないかもしれません。）
あともう一つ、重要なのは、目薬。特に、抗菌目薬はアメリカでは医者でしか処方してもらえないので、ドラッグストアで気軽に買えるのって本当にありがたい。目薬のためだけに目医者にかかるのは面倒ですからね。必ず、買って帰るものの1つです。あとアメリカではドラッグストアでは販売がされなくなってしまった添加物が入っていない目薬も大量に買って帰ります。去年、帰れていないのでちょっと困ってます。今年、日本に帰れなかったらオンラインで注文するしかありません。
4.デパ地下お菓子
日本のデパ地下っていうのは本当にユニークだと思います。多くの日本の食品はこちらでも手に入るのですが、厳選された物、地域限定のものなどはなかなか手に入りません。ちなみに私がデパ地下で買って帰るものは主に、お菓子で持ちがいいものです。たくさんの和菓子や洋菓子店舗、世界中の、それも上質なものが一同に一つのスペースに集まっているところってあまりこちらでは見かけません。日本のメーカーだけではなく、世界中のメーカーが集まっていて本当に見ているだけでも楽しいです。限定品などもあって本当に飽きません。住み着きたいほど、デパ地下が好きです。私は帰国時には何度も足を運んで、色々なデパートでお菓子をたくさん買って帰ります。結局お土産として喜ばれるものはお菓子なんですよね。うちの旦那もお菓子を買って帰ると一番喜びます。
スーパーのお菓子だがし
日本のスーパーで売られているお菓子。こちらでも実は日系スーパーなどで意外と色々と手に入るのですが、やはり新しいものや限定品は日本でしか手に入らないので、そういった新作や地域限定ものなどを中心に、大量に買って帰ります。日本の駄菓子は値段の割に美味しいと思います。
実を言うと、私の日本での買い物の半分はお菓子なんですよね。子供の頃の夢が叶えられるというか、お菓子ならそれほど値が張らないものなので、大量に死ぬほど買って帰ることができます。
6.百均
最近はアメリカにもダイソーが入ってきているので、全く手に入らないことはないのですが、アメリカでは１.５ドル均一。単純に１.５倍以上です。それにまだダイソー以外の百均ショップはありません。セリアやCan Doなどはまだないので、日本ではそちらに行くことが多いです。珍しいものや目新しいものは必ず買って帰ります。私が絶対毎回買うものは、洗濯ネットやマスキングテープ、キッチン用品。かぎ針編み用品や毛糸も置いているのが嬉しいですね。
日本で、毛糸を買って帰らないのか？という話ですが、アメリカに比べて日本では毛糸が若干割高に感じます。が、やはり日本でしか手に入らない毛糸もあるので、大量ではないですが、もちろん必ず買って帰るものの一つです。
7.日本の陶器
毎年買うかと言われるとそうではないのですが、京都など焼き物で有名な観光地に行った時は必ず湯飲みを買います。少々値ははりますがシンプルで味のある焼き物の風合いのものはこちらではあまり手に入らないので買います。残念ながら私は大切に使っていても、よく食器を割ってしまうので、割ってしまったら、再度購入する、という感じです。気に入っていた物を割ってしまうとかなり悲しいのですが、逆にいうと、新しいものを買う機会だ、と思って割り切って使用しています。
日本に帰ると荷物に入る分だけ大量にものを買います。子供と私だけで行く場合は、4つスーツケースを持っていけるのですが、2つは空で持っていき、帰りは4つともパンパンになって帰る、ということが多いです。ま、さっきも行った通り、その半分はお菓子だらけなんですけどね。
最後に、
大量に１箇所で物を買う場合（５０００円以上−５０万以下）は、外国人であれば免税されます。海外に住む日本人もこれは適用されます。少々手間ですが、必ず免税手続きはしましょうね。（もちろん、日本にいる間は封をきれません。）現在日本の消費税は１０%なので、万単位で買い物する場合は結構大きいです。免税してもらうことは絶対おすすめですよ。
