新兵衛が紙問屋寄り合いの世話役に呼び出されて問い詰められた時も、恐喝者である同業者の塙屋彦介とのやりとりも商人同士の言葉のやり取りが緊張感を持って書かれています。武家の人間が出てこないので刀を抜いて斬り合うようなシーンは全くなく、藤沢周平が庶民を描いた作品にはよく出てくる「匕首」も一度も登場しません。あくまで頭と言葉で勝負する商人の世界を強調したかったのではないだろうか。
この話の登場人物は主体である新兵衛の目線で紹介されているのですが、「おこう」を思う時にどうしても顔が思いつかない。なんとなく艶っぽい後ろ姿は想像できるが、顔と人間としての全体像を想像できません。劇中特に姿の描写がないという話ではなく、おこうは一貫してブレずに新兵衛に想いを寄せます。今の自分の境遇に苦しんでいることが紹介され、最初から今の生活を捨てることへの葛藤のようなものは感じられません。姿は魅力的だが人間臭くはなく、リアリティがないという意味ではなく、新兵衛の理想を形にした存在として描写され、個人としての彼女は見えません。それはおこうにのぼせ上がった新兵衛の目線から描かれているからで、過去に若い妾を囲ったことで新兵衛を恨み、隙あらば嫌味を言おうとする新兵衛の妻「おたき」や、その若い妾であり今は小料理屋の女将になっている「おみね」の方が読み手としてはどんな人なのかを頭の中に形作り易い。

When Shinbei is summoned by the facilitator of a gathering of paper wholesalers and questioned, and when he interacts with Hikosuke Hanawaya, a fellow trader who is a blackmailer, the exchanges between merchants are written with a sense of tension. Since there are no samurai people in the film, there are no scenes where swords are drawn and slashing each other. Perhaps he wanted to emphasize the world of merchants who compete with their heads and words.
The characters in this story are introduced from the perspective of Shinbei, who is the main character, but when I think about " Okou", I can't think of a face. I can imagine a somewhat glossy back, but I can't imagine the face and the whole picture as a human being. It's not a story that there is no particular depiction of his appearance in the play, but Okou consistently has feelings for Shinbei. It is introduced that he is suffering from his current situation, and I do not feel anything like a struggle to throw away his current life from the beginning. Her appearance is attractive but not impersonal, not in the sense that she is unrealistic, but rather portrayed as a being that embodies Shinbei's ideals and that she as an individual is invisible. This is because it is drawn from the point of view of Shinbei, who is infatuated with Kou. However, it is easier to imagine what kind of person Omine, who is now the proprietress of a small restaurant, is as a reader. (To be continued)
