４　大はし夕立ち少女

    さよは外にお使いに出るのが好きだった。大体はおかみさんの使いだが簡単な店の用を頼まれることもあって、 さよは店と奥の両方から重宝にされていた。「さよはほんとにかしこい子だよ。長吉とは大違いだ」と おかみさんが言う。長吉はさよよりひとつ齢上の小僧だが、春ごろに二度も道に迷ってお使いをはたせずに帰って、 お役ご免になった。
　「おれは頭がわるくて道に迷ったんじゃねえや。おかみさんの使いなんか、辛気くさくてやってられねえから迷った ふりをしたんだ」
　「そうよね。男の長吉さんがわけもなく道に迷うはずがないもんね」　さよは軽くいなした。
　小柄なのでおかみさんのほかは誰も気づいていないが、さよは半年ほど前に大人のしるしをみている。それからというもの、さよは自分の 身体の中にこれまではなかったものが棲みついてしまったのを感じていた。棲みついたのは女という生きものである。 にきびづらの長吉の相手などしていられなかった。
   さよはお使いで外に出るのが好きだった。今日もお使いに出たのだが、帰り道で雨にふられてしまった。

4 　 A Girl on the Ohashi Bridge in the Evening Shower

　　　Sayo liked to go out on errands. Although she was mostly used by the housewife, she was sometimes asked to perform simple shop errands, and she was valued both in the shop and the back office. ``She's a really smart girl. She's very different from Chokichi,'' says her housewife. Chokichi was a boy one year older than Sayo, but he got lost twice in the spring, returned home without running errands, and was released from service.
``I must have lost my way because I'm stupid. I can't handle my housewife's errands, so I pretended to be her.''
``That's right. There's no way a man named Chokichi would get lost for no reason.'' She said goodbye lightly.
　　　Since Sayo is petite, no one notices her except her wife, but she showed signs of adulthood about six months ago. From then on, she felt that something that had never existed before had taken up residence in her body. She was inhabited by a creature called a woman. She couldn't stand the acne-prone Chokichi.
　　　Sayo liked to go out and run errands. She went out to run an errand today, too、but got caught in the rain on the way home.
