８　『三年目』と三瀬　２

　作品には、時代の雰囲気を伝えるものとして馬がよく出てきます。

「いま宿場に着いたばかりにみえる旅支度の人間や、馬を曳いて馬宿に行く馬喰（ばくろう）らしい男などが、影絵のように動いていた」、さらには「空馬を曳いた馬子（まご）が、莨（たばこ）をふかしながら通りすぎたあと、通りはしんとしてしまった」など。
三瀬は古くから宿駅として栄えた町で、旅籠には厩舎があった。

「海が近いのに、三瀬は山中の宿場のように、そそり立つ山の傾斜に囲まれている。夜は山の方からやってきた。（中略）
　おはるは店の前に立って、薄暗くなった通りを眺めていた。今日が、男と約束した三年目だった。おはるの胸は朝から騒いでいたが、男は現われないまま、夜になった。」

　三瀬（さんぜ）は山の傾斜にへばりつく家並みと日本海の荒波が押し寄せる海沿いの町です。作品は、克明にこの地域の雰囲気を描写しています。

8　 "The Third Year" and Sanze 2

　　　In his works, horses often appear as something that conveys the atmosphere of the times.

　　　``A person who had just arrived at a post station, preparing for a trip, and a horse dealer leading a horse to a stable, were moving like silhouettes.'' After passing by smoking a cigarette, the street fell silent."
Sanze is a town that prospered as an inn station since ancient times, and there was a stable in the inn.

　　　“Even though the sea is near, Sanze is like a post town in the mountains, surrounded by towering mountain slopes. Night comes from the mountains.
Oharu was standing in front of the store, looking out at the darkened street. Today is the third year since I made a promise to a man. Oharu's chest had been making a fuss since morning, but night fell without the man appearing. ”

　　　Sanze is a coastal town with rows of houses clinging to the slopes of the mountains and the rough waves of the Sea of Japan. The work clearly depicts the atmosphere of the area.　（To be continued）
