藤沢周平『用心棒日月抄』ダイジェスト、英語対訳　１

１　はじめに
（概要）
　東北の小藩を諸般の事情で脱藩し、江戸で浪人暮らしをする青江又八郎と、その周辺の人物を描いた時代小説です。藤沢周平の作風に変化が現れた1970年代後半から『小説新潮』に連載が開始され、1991年まで続編が続けて執筆される代表作となりました。
　刊行本は全4作品ですが、最初の3作品と最終作『凶刃』とでは趣きが異なります。『用心棒日月抄』から第3作『刺客』までは、連作短編集の形で各作品を一つの物語に纏め上げており、執筆期間や作中の時間経過に連続性が見られます。これに対して第4作『凶刃』は長編小説であり、執筆時期・作中時間経過も前3作から間を置いています。これについて、新潮社単行本『刺客』にある著者あとがきで、『刺客』後の後日談の構想を述べながらも、「多分書かれることのない物語」と表現しています。

1      Introduction

　　　A historical novel depicting Matahachiro Aoe, who left a small domain in Tohoku District for various reasons and lives as a ronin (a masterless samurai) in Edo, and the people around him. From the late 1970s, when Fujisawa Shuhei 's writing style began to change, serialization began in "Shousetsu Shincho", and it became a representative work with sequels written continuously until 1991.
　　　There are 4 books in total, but the first 3 and the final "An Assassin's Dagger" have different tastes. From " Yojimbo Nichigetsusho　（A Daily / Monthly Record of A Bodyguard）” to the third work "Assassin", each work is compiled into one story in the form of a series of short stories, and continuity can be seen in the writing period and the passage of time during the work. On the other hand, the fourth work " An Assassin's Dagger" is a full-length novel, and the time of writing and the passage of time during the work is different from the previous three works. Regarding this, in the author's afterword in the Shinchosha book "An Assassin", while stating the idea of a sequel after "An Assassin", it is expressed as "a story that will probably never be written".　　　（To be continued）
