１２ 「雪のある風景」
「周平独言」（山形グラフ）に「雪のある風景」と題するエッセーがあります。単行本には所収されていません。この中で藤沢周平は、友人が衆議院議員選挙に立候補し、その選挙演説にひっぱり出されたことを紹介しています。後にも先にも、藤沢さんが選挙の応援演説に立ったのはこの時限りです。
「ふだん私は、こういうことには慎重な方である。それは、ほかのひとはいざ知らず、非力な作家である私など、特定のイデオロギーに縛られたら一行も物を書けなくなるだろうという気がするからである。また政治家の人間のとらえ方と、作家の人間を見る眼は違うという考えもある」と。
作家と政治家は基本的に仕事の次元が異なる、とも述べています。イデオロギー、あるいは政治に対して慎重に一定の距離を置こうとする姿勢がうかがえますが、この一線を越えさせたのは何だったのだろうか。
実は、この衆議院議員選挙というのは、山形師範学校の同級生で共産党の元県議小竹輝弥が立候補した時の話です。なりたくてもなれなかった教師へのこだわり。二人の友情を強いものにしていったのは、共有する「悔しさ」みたいなものがあった。藤沢さんが作家として名を成し、小竹さんが政治家として国政レベルの選挙に打って出るまでになっても、心の中で二人を結びつける「何か」があったのは確かです。
「作家にとって、人間は善と悪、高貴と下劣、美と醜をあわせもつ小箱である。（略）小説を書くということは、この小箱の鍵をあけて、人間存在という一個の闇、弁質のかたまりを手探りする作業にほかならない。（略）政治家は法律をつくり、これを行政に移して運用させ、人々の腹を満たし、財布の中味を増やそうとする。つまり人間の現実的な生活にしあわせをもたらすのが仕事である。少なくともそれを仕事の目的としている」。（「周平独言」の「雪のある風景」）
結局、小竹さんは衆院選で落選する。「周平独言」の「雪のある風景」は、次のような一文で終わります。「郷里はいま冬で、彼はその雪のある風景の中に立っています。しかし、その冬は、そんなに長い冬ではないだろうという気がするのである」。あくまでも温かい眼差しがそこにあります。

12 “Snowy Landscape”
There is an essay titled `` Snowy Landscape'' in ``Shuhei’s Monologues'' (Yamagata Graff). It is not included in the book. In this book, Fujisawa Shuhei introduces how a friend of his ran for election to the House of Representatives and was highly sought after in his campaign speech. This was the only time that Fujisawa gave a speech in support of the election.
``Normally, I'm cautious about this kind of thing. Other people don't know this, and even though I'm a weak writer, I feel like if I were tied down to a certain ideology, I wouldn't be able to write a single line.'' There is also the idea that the way politicians view people is different from the way writers view people.''
He also states that writers and politicians have fundamentally different work dimensions. It seems that he is carefully trying to keep a certain distance from ideology or politics, but what was it that made him cross this line?
This House of Representatives election is about the time when Mr. Teruya Odake, a former prefectural assembly member of the Communist Party and a classmate of mine at Yamagata Normal School, ran as a candidate. A commitment to becoming a teacher that I wanted to be but couldn't. What made their friendship strong was something like a shared sense of regret. Even though Fujisawa Shuhei had achieved fame as a writer and Mr. Odake had reached the point where he was running for office at the national level as a politician, it is certain that ``something'' connected the two in their hearts.
“For a writer, humans are small boxes that contain both good and evil, noble and base, beauty and ugliness. (Omitted) Writing a novel means unlocking this small box and discovering the darkness of human existence. It is nothing but the work of fumbling around with a bunch of excuses. (Omitted) Politicians create laws, transfer them to the administration, have them enforced, and try to fill people's stomachs and increase the contents of their wallets. In other words, they try to understand human reality. Work is what brings happiness to people's lives. At least that is the purpose of work." (“Snowy Landscape” from “Shuhei’s Monologues”)
In the end, Mr. Odake lost the House of Representatives election. ``Snowy Landscape'' in Shuhei’s Monologues” ends with the following sentence: ``It's winter in his hometown, and he's standing in the snowy landscape, but he has a feeling that the winter won't be that long.''
