 本書『海鳴り』には、海や川の情景が幾度か登場するが、抜き出してみると、たとえばこんなところ――。
 
「そして空は、よく見ればゆっくりと一方に動く黒雲に埋めつくされているのだった。街道には、ほかに人影はなかった。歩いているのはそのころはまだ新助と言っていた、新兵衛ただひとりである。
 笠を押さえながら、新兵衛はいくぶん心ぼそい気分になりながら歩いていた。そのとき新兵衛は、見えるところにくだけては散る磯波とはべつの音を耳にした。音は沖から聞こえて来た。
 そのときはじめて、新兵衛は海に眼をやったのだが、思わず声を出すところだった。沖の空は、頭上よりも一層暗く、遠く海とまじわるあたりはほとんど夜の色をしていた。音はそこから聞こえて来た。寸時の休みもなく、こうこうと海が鳴っていた。重重しく威嚇（いかく）するような、遠い海の声だった」
 
　　「新兵衛はうつむいて、少し凝っている肩をこぶしで叩いた。そのときあたりが急に明るいものに照らされたような気がした。顔を上げたが、四囲は川の闇である。上流の船の灯と、時おり眼につく岸の灯が、かすかにまたたくだけだった。
 ――気のせいか。
 と思ったとき、あたりがまたぱっと明るくなった。一瞬だったが、紫色の光の中に、川波のうねりと両岸の夜景がうかんだ。光はすぐに消えた。
 新兵衛は空を見上げ、ついで身体をひねって河口の方を見た。頭上には星がかがやいていた。そして光は背の方から来たように思えたのである。雷が鳴るかと思って耳を澄ましたが、音は聞こえなかった。ゆたゆたと鳴る波の音が、四方の闇を満たしているだけである。」
 
 その文体に導かれて、読者は物語へと誘われ行くのです。

 In this book, "Uminari　（The Roaring of the Sea.）", scenes of the sea and rivers appear several times.
 
“And the sky, if you look closely, is filled with black clouds that slowly move in one direction. There was no other person on the street. The only person walking was Shinbei, who was still called Shinsuke at that time.
Holding on to his hat, Shinbei walked with a somewhat uneasy feeling. At that time, Shinbei heard a sound different from the waves crashing and scattering where he could see them. The sound came from offshore.
For the first time, Shinbei turned his eyes to the sea and almost let out a voice. The sky offshore was darker than it was overhead, and in the distance where it mingled with the sea, it was almost the color of night. The sound came from there. The sea was roaring without a moment's rest. It was the voice of the distant sea, heavy and menacing.”

“Shinbei lowered his head and tapped his slightly stiff shoulder with his fist. At that moment, he felt as if his surroundings were suddenly illuminated by something bright. He looked up, but all around him was the darkness of the river. The lights of the ships upstream and the occasional light on the shore flickered only faintly.
--Is it just me?
　 When he thought that, the area suddenly became bright again. For a moment, he could see the swell of the river waves and the night view of both banks in the purple light. The light quickly extinguished.
Shinbei looked up at the sky, then twisted his body and looked towards the mouth of the river. Stars were shining above him. And the light seemed to come from behind him. He listened for thunder but heard no sound. Only the sound of rippling waves fills the darkness on all sides. “
