　江戸中期の超大富豪で、幕府の御用木材問屋となり、苗字帯刀を許されたほどに上り詰めた奈良屋茂左衛門は紀ノ国屋文左衛門と張り合ってきた。それは遊びにおいてでもある。紀ノ国屋文左衛門が派手に遊べば、奈良屋茂左衛門は負けじと江戸に奈良屋茂左衛門ありと示すような遊びを繰り広げたものである。
　寛永通宝の通用が廃止されるということを喜兵衛から聞いた時、奈良屋茂左衛門は紀ノ国屋文左衛門もこれで終りだと思った。そして、意外にあっけなかったという思いもあった。
　終わりは次のとおりです。

「奈良茂は、このライバルが崩れていく様を目の前にして、紀文と競った商売の駆け引きや、色町の遊びが急に色あせ索漠と枯れて見える。　
　紀文だけでなく、自分の時代も終わったのだと感じ始めていた。……　」

　　　Naraya Mozaemon, a super-rich man in the mid-Edo period who rose to the top to become the Shogunate's official timber wholesaler and to be allowed to use his family name and carry a sword, competed with Kinokuniya Bunzaemon. This was also in terms of play. When Kinokuniya Bunzaemon played flashily, Naraya Mozaemon played hard to outdo him, showing that Naraya Mozaemon was in Edo.
　　　When Kibei told Naraya Mozaemon that the Kan'ei Tsūhō currency was to be abolished, Naraya Mozaemon thought that this was the end for Kinokuniya Bunzaemon as well. And he also felt that it was unexpectedly abrupt.

　　　"As Naraya Mozaemon witnessed the collapse of his rival, the business negotiations he had competed with Kibun and the entertainment of the red-light district suddenly seemed faded and desolate.
