　以登には婿を迎える話が決まっており、父から二度と孫四郎に会ってはならんと言われた。以登は胸の中で終わった恋の行方を追っていた。そして孫四郎にも内々の縁組の話が進んでいるらしかった。孫四郎の婿入り先の相手は以登よりも２つ上の加代で、習字とお手前を習いに通った稽古仲間だった。礼儀作法が重視される世界に孫四郎の剣が生きるとは思われない。加代は才はじけた美人である。その加世にあるうわさがあった。妻子ある男と通じているというのだ。相手は藤井勘解由。若干三十歳で用人に挙げられた切れ者だ。
