７ 品川洲崎の男
みちは目の前を通った男に目をやった。男はみちと少し前まで訳ありだった人物である。男の名前は知らない。その男が若い女と一緒に歩いていた。
藤沢最後の作品集におさまる短編「うぐいす」である。なんでも、藤沢が愛した浮世絵から発想を得て、書かれたものがこの「日暮れ竹河岸」には集められている。藤沢といえば歴史に名を残すような人物を描いたのではなく、なもないような、どこにでもいる、いやどこにでもいた人の生きた歩みというか、人生の中の光や影を綴っているのだが、この短編もまさにそうである。長屋暮らしのおすぎと勝蔵夫婦のことを、いやおすぎのことを書き進めている。まさに市井ものである。陽気で話好きのおすぎはいつも井戸端の中心だった。話に夢中だったおすぎは台所から火を出し、小さい息子を死なしてしまう。勝蔵から激しくせっかんされ、それ以来夫婦の仲も冷え、おすぎは陰気で無口となてしまった。2年余りが過ぎ大工職人だった勝蔵は親方の許しで免許をいただけることとなる。そのことをおすぎに告げたとき、勝蔵は「やり直すか」とつぶやくのである。それを聞いたおすぎは再び井戸端に戻っていくのである。細やかな描写が秀逸である。それ以上に心理の描写が秀逸である。

7 A Man from Shinagawa Suzaki
Michi looked at the man who passed in front of her. The man was someone who had been with Michi for a while. I don't know the man's name. A man was walking with a young woman.
Fujisawa's short story ``Uguisu'' is included in Fujisawa's last collection of works. Everything written by Fujisawa seems to have been inspired by the Ukiyo-e prints that he loved, and has been collected in this ``Takegashi at Sunset''. Rather than depicting a person whose name will leave a lasting impression, I am writing about the life history of people who can be found anywhere, or who have been everywhere, and the light and shadow in their lives. The same is true of the short story, which is about Osugi and Katsuzo, a couple who live in a tenement house.
Osugi, a cheerful and talkative person, was always the center of attention at the well. Osugi, who was so absorbed in stories, started a fire in the kitchen and killed his small son. Katsuzo attacked him violently, and since then, the relationship between the couple has cooled down, and Osugi has become gloomy. After more than two years, Katsuzo, who was a carpenter, was given a license with the permission of his master. When he told Osugi about this, Katsuzo murmured, "Do you want to start over?" Osugi returns to the well.
His detailed descriptions are excellent, but his psychological descriptions are even more excellent. （To be continued）
