 　新兵衛がおこうの介抱に宿を使ったことを邪推した紙問屋の塙屋（はなわや）彦助が恐喝してくる。執拗に脅しをかけてくる彦助に、新兵衛の堪忍袋の緒が切れる。路上、取っ組み合った勢いで彦助の首に手を回してしまう。老練な岡っ引きの追及が迫る。
　 進退窮まった新兵衛は、ある決断を下し、踏み出していく。決断が良きものであったのかどうか、著者は新兵衛に「わからない」とつぶやかせている。人生は一度しかなく、ひとつの選択しかないものであるなら、新兵衛の決意を尊びたくも思う。
　その一方で、新兵衛は塙屋彦助とのことは金で始末を付けた。だが、この一連のことで度々おこうと会っている内に新兵衛の中には別の気持ちが芽生えていた。でも2人にとって互いの存在は、家庭内が絶望的な状況の中のたった一つの希望で、いつしか2人は結ばれてしまうほどかけがえのないものでした。物語のラストで2人は駆け落ちを決断します。でも、新兵衛はわからなかったとつぶやきます。

 　 Hikosuke Hanawaya, a paper wholesaler, blackmails Shinbei for using the inn to take care of Okou. Shinbei's patience runs out when Hikosuke relentlessly threatens him. On the street, they struggle and wrap their arms around Hikosuke's neck. The pursuit of the experienced Okkappiki （a private detective）approaches.
          Shinbei, who was in a pinch, made a decision and took a step forward. Whether the decision was a good one or not, the author makes Shinbei mutter, "I don't know." If you only have one life and only one choice, then I would like to respect Shinbei's determination.
　　　On the other hand, Shinbei settled with Hikosuke Hanawaya with money. However, while meeting frequently about this series of things, Shinbei had a different feeling. But for the two of them, each other's existence was the only hope in a hopeless situation at home, and it was so irreplaceable that they would eventually become united. At the end of the story, the two decide to elope. But Shinbei mutters that he didn't understand.
