主人公・小野屋新兵衛が外に女を囲ったり、人妻に心を寄せたりするのだから、つれ合いの気持ちもわからないではない。しかし、これが江戸時代の富裕な商家の主人のすることであれば、当時としては外に女を囲う程度のことは目くじらを立てるほどのことはない。江戸時代の不倫・密通は命がけだったことがあります。 迷いつつも最後は命がけで突き進む二人の姿が爽快なものに見えました。恋愛を理性でコントロールするというのは、なかなか難しいことだと思います。
江戸の時空間に舞台を借りて、著者が主題としているのは、いま現代であり、人間の関係性であり、人の生き方を問うものに他ならないことが伝わってきます。『半生の記』年譜の「『海鳴り』の執筆を終えて」において、藤沢周平は当初、新兵衛とおこうを心中させることで結末をつけるつもりでいたところ、「長い間つき合っているうちに二人に情が移ったというか、殺すにはしのびなくなって、少し無理をして江戸からにがしたのである」と記しています。
また、新兵衛とおこうのいわゆる「濡れ場」も他の藤沢周平の小説に比べると何度も詳細に書かれていて、読み手にも大人を意識させる小説です。
新兵衛と「おこう」の関係が話の中心ですが、江戸の紙問屋としての紙漉屋、仲買い、卸先を巻き込んだ商売の話も複雑で面白い。

The main character, Shinbei Onoya, surrounds himself with women outside and gives his heart to married women, so it's possible that he doesn't understand the feelings of mating. However, if this was what the master of a wealthy merchant in the Edo period did, then in those days it was nothing to be ashamed of as keeping a woman outside. In the Edo period, adultery and fornication were life-threatening. It was exhilarating to see the two of them at the end of their hesitation, risking their lives to push forward. I think it's quite difficult to control love with reason.
Borrowing the space and time of Edo, the author's themes are the present age, human relationships, and questions about the way people live. In the chronology of "Hansei no Ki", "After writing 'Uminari'", Fujisawa Shuhei initially intended to conclude by making Shinbei and Okou commit suicide, I must say that my feelings for him had shifted, or rather, I couldn't bear to kill him, so I pushed myself a little and escaped from Edo."
In addition, Shinbei and Okou's so-called "love scenes" are written in more detail than in other Fujisawa Shuhei novels, making the reader aware of adults.
The main focus of the story is on the relationship between Shinbei and "Okou", but the story of the business involving the Edo paper wholesalers, the paper-making companies, middlemen, and wholesalers is also complex and interesting. （To be continued）
