「自己確認」
　自伝めいたものを書くことについて、今ひとつ気が乗らないのだが、藤沢周平はどのような道筋があって小説家になったのかというのを自身で確かめるには、一通り自身の過去を振り返らないと分からないといって書いているのが本書です。
「学校ぎらい」
　他のエッセーでも書かれていますが、藤沢周平は小学校五年生の時に授業中に声を出せなくなるという状態になった。その屈辱感から逃げるためか、代替行為か分からないが、読書量が劇的に増えたと書かれています。

　　He was not very keen on writing anything that resembled an autobiography, but to find out for himself what path led Shuhei Fujisawa to become a novelist, he had to look back at his past.  This book is based on the idea that you won't understand unless you look back on your past.

"I Hate School"
　　As written in other essays, Fujisawa Shuhei became unable to speak during class when he was in the fifth grade of elementary school.
