６　朝顔

　おうのは夫の忠兵衛が取引先にわけてもらったという朝顔を丹念に育てていた。忠兵衛とおうとの間には子供がいない。そして、忠兵衛はそとに妾を囲んでいた。
 
　おうのは、畳表問屋伊原屋の女主人。
三十八歳になるが、まだ夫婦の間に子供がいない・・・。
とは言え童顔で美貌の彼女に対して、
お店の奉公人たちは「天女さま」と呼ぶのだ。
実はその呼び名には、もう一つの意味がある。―――
おうのが、若い妾を囲っている主人に、
何一つ非難しないことに対する皮肉である。
 
　それでも彼女は、主人からもらった朝顔の種を
土蔵の脇に植え、夢中になって朝顔を育てた。
そしてこの夏に、幾十もの華麗で大きな花をつけたのである。
　ところがその朝顔の種は、去年主人が、
妾の家からとってきたことがわかったのだ・・・。
おうのがやっと見つけた、朝顔を育てるという楽しみ。―――
怒りと哀しみにくれた彼女は、藍色、桃色、白とそろった
朝顔の花を、すべてむしり取ってしまいます。
彼女はその外見や言動とは別に、「天女」でもなんでもない。
自身の幸せを求める、一人の女性だっただけでした・・・。

6 　Morning Glories

　　　Ouno was carefully growing morning glories that her husband, Chubei, had received from a business partner.　She and Chubei did not have any children together. And Chubei had a mistress outside.

　　　Ouno is the proprietress of Iharaya, a tatami wholesaler.
She is thirty-eight years old, but she and her husband do not have any children yet...
　　　However, for her baby-faced and beautiful girlfriend,
the servants at the shop call her ``Tenyo-sama.''
Actually, the name has another meaning. ---
Ouno doesn't blame the master who has his young concubine,
This is ironic for not blaming anything.

　　　Still, she took the morning glory seeds that her master gave her.
She planted it next to her storehouse and became obsessed with growing her morning glories.　And this summer, she produced dozens of gorgeous, large flowers.
　　　However, the morning glory seeds were grown by her husband last year.　It turned out that it was taken from his concubine's house...
Ouno has finally discovered the joy of growing morning glories. ---
In her anger and sadness, she plucked off all the blue, pink, and white morning glory flowers.
Apart from her appearance and behavior, she is not a ``celestial maiden'' or anything.　She was just a woman seeking her happiness...
