　定回り同心の笠戸孫十郎が伊勢蔵のところに寄った時のこと。伊勢蔵が磯六からの伝言があるといってきた。磯六は父が同心をしている時に使っていた男であるが、孫十郎の代になって縁を切った男である。磯六は際どいネタを持ち込むような男だったのである。
　孫十郎は磯六が現れるのを待っていたが、磯六が現れない。不審に思っていると投げ文があり、磯六は現れないという。投げ文に書かれたところに赴くと磯六が殺されていた。
　そして、孫十郎を狙ったように矢が飛んできた。一体誰が、何のために？磯六が殺される前に、じじいが帰ってきやがったな、と独り言を言っているのを聞いた者がいる。このじじいとは誰なのか？

　　　The regular policeman Kasado Magojuro stopped by Isezo's house. Isezo said he had a message from Isoroku. Isoroku was a man his father had used when he was a policeman, but he severed ties with Magojuro. Isoroku was the kind of man who would bring in risky material.
　　　Magojuro waited for Isoroku to show up, but he didn't. He was suspicious when he received a note saying that Isoroku would not be there. When he went to the place mentioned in the note, he found Isoroku dead.
Then an arrow flew as if aimed at Magojuro. Who could it be, and why? Before Isoroku was killed, someone heard him mutter to himself, "The old man has come back." Who was this old man?　（To be continued）
