６　『蝉しぐれ』と霧

　美しく描写される霧も、持つ意味においては例外でない。『蝉しぐれ』の冒頭近く、こんなくだりがあります。

「いちめんの青い田圃は、早朝の日射しを受けて赤らんでいるが、はるか遠くの青黒い村落の森と接するあたりには、まだ夜の名残りの霧が残っていた。じっと動かない霧も、朝の光を受けて、かすかに赤らんで見える」（『蝉しぐれ』）。
農村の原風景とでもいうべき、美しい描写です。そうした情景描写の一方で、「じっと動かない霧」は、主人公・牧文四郎の、藩の世継ぎをめぐる暗闘にほんろうされる宿命を暗示しています。赤らむ色合いは、「おふく」との淡い恋に彩られる青春時代を意味しています。

　霧をこれほど効果的に描いた作家を、他かに見いだすことは難しい。

　藤沢周平の郷里・鶴岡市高坂は、標高五百メートル足らずの金峯山（きんぼうざん）の麓にある集落です。そこから仰ぎ見るこの山は、頂上近くが急峻なため、標高に似合わず天候の変化が激しい。霧がよくかかるのです。特に夏は、杉の黒々とした梢（こずえ）を乳色の霧が覆う。流れずじっととどまっていたかと思うと、突然消えて日の光が降ってくる。それはあたかも、藤沢さんの作品に漂う霧のようでもあります。

6 "The Cicada Buzz" and Fog

　　　The beautifully depicted fog is no exception in its meaning. Near the beginning of “The Cicada Buzz", there is a passage like this.

“The green rice paddy fields were reddish in the early morning sun, but the fog that was left over from the night still lingered in the area that bordered the blue-black forest of the village in the distance. It looks faintly reddish under the light" (“The Cicada Buzz").

　　　It is a beautiful depiction that should be called the original landscape of a rural village. On the other hand, the "Standing Fog" hints at the fate of the main character, Bunshiro Maki, who will be involved in a secret battle over the heir to the clan. The reddish color means the youthful age colored by the faint love with "Ofuku".

　　　It is difficult to find another artist who has painted fog so effectively.

　　　Fujisawa Shuhei 's hometown, Takasaka, Tsuruoka City, is a village at the foot of Mt. Kinbo, which is less than 500 meters above sea level. Looking up from there, this mountain is steep near the top, so the weather changes drastically in spite of its altitude. It's often foggy. Especially in the summer, the black treetops of the cedar trees are covered with a milky mist. Just when I thought it was standing still without flowing, it suddenly disappeared and the sunlight came down. It's like the fog that hangs over Fujisawa Shuhei's work.
