５　（あらすじ）　４
　その後、新兵衛が用事で外に出たときのこと。丸子屋のおかみおこうと久しぶりに出会った。あのとき以来だったが、あの日に塙屋彦助に見られたという。新兵衛はよりによって悪い男に見つかったものだと思った。新兵衛がおこうの介抱に宿を使ったことを邪推した紙問屋の塙屋（はなわや）彦助が恐喝してきた。新兵衛がとりあえずカネで片付け、それをおこうに報告した帰り道――。
 
　「そこまで眼をつぶって歩けば、おこうとのことは終りだった。おみねが言ったように、万事めでたく、事もなく。あとは彦助の後始末が残るだけである。
「新兵衛さん」
 うしろで、おこうの声がした。
「もう、これっきりですか？」
 2人の仲が深まり、宿の部屋から消え行く両国の花火を見上げている――。
おこうは身体を寄せると、新兵衛の背にそっと手を置いた。いたわるようなしぐさだった。
「新兵衛さん、いっそ駆け落ちしませんか？」

5 　(Synopsis) 4
　　　After that, when Shinbei went out on business, he met Okou, the landlady of Marukoya, for the first time in a long time. It was the first time since that time, but it is said that Hikosuke Hanawaya saw him that day. he thought Shinbei had been found by a bad man. Hikosuke Hanawaya, a paper wholesaler, blackmails Shinbei for using the inn to take care of Okou. Shinbei used the money for the time being and reported it to Okou on the way home.
 
"Once I closed my eyes and walked that far, the incident with Okou was over. Just like Omine said, everything was fine, and all that was left was to clean up Hikosuke's aftermath."
"Shinbei-san"
 I heard a voice behind me.
“Is this enough?”
 　The relationship between the two has deepened, and they are looking up at the disappearing fireworks of Ryogoku from the room of the inn.
Okou leaned over and gently placed her hand on Shinbei's back. It was a gesture of compassion.
