　登城した布施甚五郎を待ち受けていたのは藩主の弟・織部正吉龍の上意討の命であった。これには甚五郎は驚き、同じく剣のたつ藤井源助をと固辞したが、源助は病気で駄目だという。
　甚五郎はやむなく受けることにしたが、ひどく憂鬱である。もしかしたら討ちそこねるかもしれない。というのも、甚五郎には緊張した時に嚔が連発するという奇癖があるのだ。
　しかも、決まって大事な時にこの奇癖が表に出るから困ってしまうのである。このことを知っているのは妻の弥生しかいない。

　　　Waiting for Fuse Jingoro when he arrives at the castle is an order from the lord to kill his younger brother, Oribe Masakitatsu. Jingoro is shocked by this and refuses, preferring Fujii Gensuke, who is also skilled with the sword, but Gensuke is ill and cannot take the job.
　　　Jingoro is forced to accept the offer but is deeply depressed. He is afraid he might miss the kill. This is because Jingoro has a strange habit of repeatedly sneezing when he is nervous.
What's more, this strange habit always comes out at important times, causing him trouble. The only person who knows about this is his wife, Yayoi.
