『時雨のあと』４　「時雨のあと」

　身体を悪くして以来、すさんだ日々を過す鳶の安蔵。妹みゆきは、兄の立ち直りを心の支えに、苦界に身を沈めた。客のあい間に小銭をつかみ兄に会うみゆき。ふたりの背に、冷たい時雨が降りそそぐ・・・・・。
　安蔵は博奕にはまり、妹のみゆきは錺師（かざりし）の見習いで金がいると信じて、女郎屋で働いた金を渡している。みゆきの風邪で寝込む姿を見て、安蔵は思い出した。子供のとき二人は親戚に預けられた。叱られて夜飯を抜かれ泣いている安蔵の傍で、幼いみゆきが云った。「兄ちゃんが食べないから、あたいも食べない」
　屋根を叩いていた時雨は、遠く去ったらしく、夜の静けさが家のまわりを取り巻いている気配がした。

“After the Drizzling Rain"

　　　Since falling ill, Yasuzo, a steeplejack, has been living a miserable life. His younger sister Miyuki, basks in her suffering, hoping for her brother's recovery. In between customers, Miyuki grabs some coins and meets her brother. The cold dazzling rain falls on their backs...
 
　　　Yasuzo is addicted to gambling, while Miyuki, an apprentice metal maker, believes she needs money and gives him the money she earns from working at a brothel. Seeing Miyuki ill with a cold and bedridden, Yasuzo is reminded of something. When they were children, the two were sent to live with relatives. As Yasuzo cried after being scolded and denied dinner, young Miyuki said next to him. "If you don't eat, I won't eat either."
 
　　　The dazzling rain that had been banging on the roof seemed to have gone far away, and the silence of night seemed to surround the house.
