　隣に住む伊作は、妻を亡くし赤子を抱えて覇気がなく、おてつは腹立たしかった。仕事先に赤子を連れていけず、本当に困っていると知ったおてつは、赤子を預かることにした。
　婚約者と一緒にいても赤子のことが気になりだしたおてつの胸に、小さな思いが生まれ始めていた。
　赤子の世話を始めたことで母性本能が生まれ始めた様子は、夢を見ていた少女から現実を見る大人の女への脱皮のように感じられる。
　やがて母性本能はある人物へ向かうべくして向かって、世の中上手い具合にできていると思わせる。
　この作品は、おてつが男らしく見栄えの良い作次よりも、赤ん坊のおけいと、その塩たれた父との生活を選ぶことを決意するまでの物語です。

　　　Isaku, who lives next door, lost his wife, has a baby, and is listless, which makes Otetsu angry. When Otetsu finds out that he is in real trouble because he cannot take the baby to work, she decides to take care of the baby.
　　　Even when she is with her fiancé, Otetsu begins to worry about the baby, and a small feeling begins to grow in her heart.
As she begins to care for the baby, her maternal instinct begins to emerge, and it feels like she is shedding her skin from a dreamy girl to a realistic adult woman.
　　　Eventually, her maternal instinct is directed towards a certain person, making her believe that the world is a good place.
　　　This work tells the story of how Otetsu decides to choose a life with baby Okei and her salty father over the manly and good-looking Sakuji.
