「海鳴り」という表題は、若かりし新兵衛が仕事で出かけた道中、湘南の海岸で沖を大風が通る音、「海鳴り」、を聞いたことから来ています。この音を聞いた新兵衛は「急に恐ろしくなって小走りに街道を走」るのです。そしてその場にいた老人にこの後「大荒れになるぞ」と言われ、その通り雨交じりの強い風に撃たれる。
　新兵衛は自分の店が大店の標的にされていることに気づき考えながら歩いている、歩く先は恐喝者塙屋彦介との話し合いの場所である、その道すがら湘南の海辺で聞いた不安を掻き立てる音「海鳴り」を聞くのです。
    もちろん海鳴りの音が聞こえるはずはなかった。そこは神田馬喰町の人ごみの中で、日が暮れかけた道を、町のざわめきが満たしているだけだった。海鳴りと聞いたのは、ひょっとしたら、新兵衛の胸に芽ばえた、不吉な予感がざわめき合う音だったかもしれません。
　そしてこの後の面会で彦介を丸め込んだ新兵衛は「おこう」にのめり込んでいくことになるのです。商売のこと、恐喝のことに対する不吉な予感、それだけでなくこの本の主題である中年になった自分の将来、老齢、死に向かう時の休まない流れが沖を通る大風とその音「海鳴り」に重なったのではなかろうか。

　　　The title "Uminari （The Roaring of the Sea.）" comes from when young Shinbei heard the sound of a strong wind blowing off the coast of Shonan on his way to work. Hearing this sound, Shinbei ``suddenly became frightened and trotted down the highway''. And an old man who was there said, "It's going to be a stormy day," and he was hit by a strong wind mixed with rain.
　　　Shinbei realizes that his store is being targeted by a large store, and walks thinking about it. He heard the roaring sound of the sea.
           Of course, the sound of the roaring sea should not have been heard. There, in the crowds of Kanda Bakurocho, only the hustle and bustle of the town filled the darkened streets. What he heard as the roar of the sea might have been the sound of an ominous premonition growing in Shinbei's heart.
　　　And in the meeting after this, Shinbei, who had a crush on Hikosuke, became obsessed with "Okou". Ominous premonitions about business and blackmail, as well as the theme of this book: my future in middle age, old age, and death. I wonder if it overlapped with ".
