　『風の果て』の結びの文章から。
 
　『又左衛門は顔を上げた。澄み切った空を震わせて風が渡って行った。冬の兆しの西風だった。強い風に、左手の雑木林から、小鳥のように落ち葉が舞い上がるのが見えた。
ー 風が走るように……。
　一目散にここまで走って来たが、何が残ったか。忠兵衛とは仲違いし、市之丞と一蔵は死に、庄六は……。
　ー 庄六め。
　この間は言いたいことを言いやがった。呆然と虚空を見つめていた又左衛門は、ふと村の方から羽織、袴の数人の村びとがこちらに向かってくるのに気づいた。村役人が家老の巡視と見て、休息をすすめに来たのだろう。
　桑山又左衛門は咳ばらいした。威厳に満ちた家老の顔になっていた。』

In the closing sentence of "The End of the Wind".
 
　　　”Matazaemon looked up. A gust of wind blew across the clear sky. It was a westerly wind, a sign of winter. In the strong wind, he could see fallen leaves flying like little birds from the thicket on his left.
- Like the wind blowing...
He ran all the way here, but what was left? Ichinojo and Ichizo died, and Shoroku...
- Shoroku !
　　　During this time, he refused to say what he wanted to say. Matazaemon, who was stunned and staring into the void, suddenly noticed several villagers in haori coat and hakama coming towards him. The village official must have seen it as a patrol by the chief retainer and came to recommend a rest.
