９　論考　１　（構成）

　主人公である首席家老の又左衛門のもとにかつての親友から果たし状が届くところから始まり、次に、かつての又左衛門である隼太を含む、道場で仲が良かった５人を描き、過去の出来事と現在進行形とを繰り返し描き、最終的には、過去と現在が交わるような構成になっている。
　又左衛門と市之丞を含む５人は、それぞれ異なった人生を歩むことになるのだが、主人公である又左衛門、隼太は、軽輩から執政まで昇りつめたというのに釈然としない思いを抱いている。そして、普請組の別の婿の口もあったことを考えて、普請組に勤めるかつての親友５人のうちの一人である庄六に、その後悔の念を打ち明ける。運とは悲運とはなにかを考えさせられると同時に幸せとは不幸せとは何かを考えさせられる内容である。江戸時代の地方の藩における武士に投影させ、藤沢周平は上手に描いている。人生とは何かを考えさせられる内容である。

　　　It begins with the main character, the chief retainer, Matazaemon, receiving a letter of challenge from his former best friend, and then draws five people who were close to the dojo, including Hayata, who was the former Matazaemon. The events of the past and the present tense are repeatedly drawn, and in the end, the composition is such that the past and the present intersect.
　　　Five people, including Matazaemon and Ichinojo, will each lead different lives, but the main characters, Matazaemon and Hayata, have an unsatisfying feeling that they have risen from a junior to a consul. Then, thinking that another son-in-law of the Fushin-gumi was also mentioned, he confesses his regret to Shoroku, one of his five former close friends who worked for the Fushin-gumi. It is content that makes you think about what is luck and what is misfortune, and at the same time, what is happiness and unhappiness. Fujisawa Shuhei skillfully portrays the samurai of the Edo period in rural areas. It makes you think about what life is.　（To be continued）
