１３　　ふくが藩主の側室となり流産

＊ふくは15歳の時、藩主の手が付いて側室となった。すぐに子を身ごもったが、この時は流産してしまう。それについて与之助は、側室おふねの陰謀だという噂があると文四郎に語った。また、その後送られてきた与之助の手紙には、江戸藩邸でにわかにふくの評判が悪化し、藩主の寵愛を失ったという噂について触れてあった。

　逸平は、今度は文四郎の顔をのぞきこむような眼つきをした。
　「貴様の好きなおふくさんは・・・・・」
　「おい、言葉に気を付けろ」
　「おっと、すまん。お福さまは以前、殿の御子を流産したことがあるそうだ。しかもそれは志摩守さまのおふくろさまのせいではないかと言う者がいる。その話しは耳にしたか」
　「聞いた」
　「ふ--ん」
　　逸平はゆっくりと盃に酒をついだ。
　「殿が欅御殿のひとをこれほど内密にするのは、そのひとがお福様だからではないかといううわさは、そのへんから来ているらしい」
　　逸平はそこで言葉を切った。それから突然に言った。
　「この話は、おぬしも聞いてるんじゃないのか」
　「ああ、聞いた」　
　　と文四郎は言った。すでに城中のうわさになっているとすれば、逸平に隠しても仕方がないことである。
　「いや、おれの言ってるのは、だ」
　　逸平は、また文四郎の顔をのぞきこむような眼につきをした。
　「もっと、ずっと前から耳にしてたんじゃないかということだよ」
　「うむ、ずっと前に聞いた」
　「与之助が帰国して来たときに聞いた」
　「で、おれに黙っていたわけか」
　「確かな話しではないからな」
　　文四郎は言った。
　「それに、事は極秘だ。貴様を信用せぬわけではないが、一人に話せばどんなときに話しが外に洩れぬものでもない」
　「おれはむやみにしゃべったりせんぞ」
　「それはわかっている」
　　文四郎は逸平の盃に酒をついだ。
　「しかし、あそこにお福さまがいて、殿の御子を生んだなどということがむこうに知られれば、ただでは済まんだろう」
　「里村派のことだな」
　　逸平は言ったが、そこで考え込む表情になった。そして眼を文四郎にもどした。
　「しかし、まさか女、子供を暗殺もすまい」
　「それはわからん。いや、その恐れは十分にあると考えたから、おぬしにも口を閉ざしていたのだ。悪く思うな」
　「だが、文四郎」
　　逸平はあわただしく盃をあけてから言った。
　「そうだとすると、いまのようにうわさがひろまっては困ることにならんか」
　「むろん困る。だが当分は心配なかろう。殿は来年の春まで在城されるし、それにさっきの話しに出て来た護衛の人間もいる」
　　文四郎は、帰国した与之助からその話しを聞き、欅御殿の様子をさぐりに行ったときのことを逸平に話した。
　「男は二人とも、なかなかの遣い手に見えたな。言葉は江戸弁だった。信夫屋に行ったのは、そのうちの一人に違いない」
　「そうか、様子を見に行ったのか」
　　逸平は文四郎に盃を持たせて酒をついだ。それから酔いに赤らんだ顔に、突然に笑いを浮かべた。
　「やはり、おふくさんのことはいつまでも気になるらしいな」
　「当たり前だ」　　と文四郎は言った。文四郎は自分がいつもより酔っているのを感じた。
　「危難を見捨ててはおけん」
　「こいつ、本音を吐きやがったな」
　　逸平は江戸返りの藩士からでも仕入れたらしい、ぞんざいな口のきき方をした。そして急にきょとんとした顔を文四郎にむけた。
　「しかしあそこにおふくさんがいるというのは、あくまでも推測だ。誰も本人を見ておらん」
　「誰も見てはおらん」と文四郎も言った。多分、あの村上七郎右衛門もお福を見てはいないだろうと、唐突に日暮れの野道から現れた村上を思い返したが、しかし文四郎は一方で、お福はやはりあの建物の中にいて、この夏藩主の子を生んだにちがいないという確信が強まるのを感じていた。
　　理由は、江戸弁を話す女がもとめて行った晒二反である。その二人は、十分に準備がととのわないうちにお産が迫ったために、素姓をあやしまれるのを覚悟の上で晒を求めて走ったのではなかろうか。(藤沢周平『蝉しぐれ』-暗闘　１)
