3 （あらすじ） ２
紙問屋の主人達が寄合いを終えて店を出て、駕籠を待っている。小野屋新兵衛もその一人だった。ぼんやりと待っていると塙屋彦助に声をかけられた。彦助は完全に出来上がっていた。その帰り道。新兵衛は自分に降りかかる老いの兆候を考えていた。ある時期を境にして自分は老いの方に身を置いてしまった感覚がある。それに気が付いたときに新兵衛は女遊びに走った。だが、それもいい加減なものだったと今では思っている。女遊びのあとに残ったのは家の中の暗い不和だけだった。
物思いにふけっていると、地面にうずくまった女を見つけた。丸子屋のおかみおこうだった。悪酔いしたらしい。新兵衛はおこうを駕籠に乗せようと思ったが駕籠は見えない。仕方ないので、どこかで休ませようと思った。新兵衛が思いついたのは近くにある連れ込み宿のような店だった。仕方のないこととはいえ、おこうを連れ込み宿に連れてきたのは異常なことだった。新兵衛は気が付いたおこうに、事情を詳しく説明した。そして、今夜のことは他言しないようにと念を押した。その脅しへの対応を話し合うためにおこうと密かに面会を続けるうちに本当にお互いに惹かれあうようになり、逢瀬を重ねるようになる。

3 (Synopsis) 2
The owners of the paper wholesaler have finished their meeting and left the store, waiting for the palanquin. Onoya Shinbei was one of them. As he waited absentmindedly, he was spoken to by Hikosuke Hanawaya. Hikosuke was completely finished. On the way home. Shinbei thought about the signs of old age that would befall him. At a certain point in time, he feels that he has put himself on the old side. When Shinbei noticed that, he ran to play with women. But now he thinks that was also sloppy. All that remained after the womanizing was a dark discord in the house.
As he lost himself in thought, he found a woman crouched on the ground. She was the landlady of Marukoya. She must have been drunk. Shinbei tried to put the incense on the palanquin, but he couldn't see the palanquin. He can't help it, so he thought he'd rest somewhere. What Shinbei came up with was a store like a nearby lodging.
