　終章「天空の声」から
 
　『忠兵衛の失点を拾い上げて反撃したのは、正義だった。やましいところはない、と又左衛門は考えていたのである。
　だがはたしてそうかと、又左衛門はいまはじめて、自分の歩いて来た道を怪しみ振り向いているのだった。執政入りしてから足掛け十一年。家老になってからでさえ、六年の歳月が過ぎていた。その間、藩政を担う日日は重くて辛かったかといえば、否である。そういう時期が全くなかったわけではないが、概して言えば、人にこそ言わぬ又左衛門は大方は愉快な日日を送って来た、と言ってもよい。
　その時々の施策を、他の執政たちとああでもない、こうでもないとつつき合い、時には意見が対立してはげしく言い争っても、中身が藩政に関する事柄と思えばその争論さえも楽しく、そこにはかつて知らなかった気持ちの充足があった。』

　　　”It was justice to pick up on Chubei's loss and counterattack. Matazaemon thought that there was nothing to be guilty of.
　　　However, for the first time, Matazaemon was looking back at the path he had walked, wondering if that was really the case. It has been eleven years since he entered office. Six years had passed since he became a chief retainer. 　　　During that time, it would be wrong to say that the days when he was in charge of the administration of the domain were heavy and painful. It's not that there weren't any such periods, but generally speaking, it's safe to say that Matazaemon, who doesn't talk to people, has spent most of his days pleasantly.
　　　Even if he argued with the other consuls about the policies of the time, saying that they weren't like this or that, and even if they argued fiercely against each other, if they thought that the content of the disputes was related to the affairs of the domain, even the disputes would be fun. There was a feeling of fullness that he had never known before.”
