５　『小川の辺』と『一茶』と霧

　「不安」を示す霧は、他の作品にもよく出てきます。一、二上げてみよう。短編『小川の辺』では、藩士を斬って脱藩した妹の亭主を上意討ちにするため旅に出る主人公。藩命を遂行するにせよ、返り討ちに遇うにせよ、いずれも気の重い立場なのです。その朝、城下はやはり霧が立ち込めていました。
　さらには、歴史小説の代表作の一つでもある『一茶』で、遺産をめぐる争いを仕掛け、信濃国・柏原村に弟を訪ねる小林一茶は、故郷の山々にかかる濃い霧を見るのです。骨肉相食（あいは）む異母弟との争闘が待っているのです。

5 "At the Side of a Brook " and "Issa" and Fog

　　　The fog that indicates "anxiety" appears in other works. Let's go up one or two. In the short story "Ogawa no hotori ("At the Side of a Brook )", the main character sets out on a journey to avenge his sister's husband who fled the domain by killing a samurai. Whether he fulfills the clan's orders or faces retribution, he is in a heavy position. That morning, the castle town was still covered with fog.
　　　Furthermore, in "Issa", one of the masterpieces of historical novels, Kobayashi Issa, who sets up a dispute over inheritance and visits his brother in Kashiwabara Village, Shinano Province, sees a thick fog hanging over the mountains of his hometown. He is in a bone-and-meat conflict with his half-brother.　（To be continued）
