２　『験試(げんだめ)し』

　娘のたみえが崖から落ちそうになるのを、おとしがたみをの腕を掴んでいた。近道をしようとしたばかりに、落ちてしまったのだ。もう駄目だと思ったところを救ってくれたのは山伏だった。この山伏は、昔は鷲蔵といったおとしも知っている人間だった。今は大鷲坊と名乗っている。
この大鷲坊は、村の正式な別当になるため書付けを持ってやって来たのだが、村には既に月心坊という山伏がいた。村のものたちには、大鷲坊が正式な別当かどうかはともかくとして、法力のある山伏が必要だった。そこで、長人の利助が提案したのは、歩けなくなっているおきくという娘を治して見せろというものだった。

2. "The Test of Courage"

　　　He held onto Otoshi's arm to stop his daughter Tamie from falling off a cliff. She had fallen while trying to take a shortcut. Just when he thought he was done for, a mountain ascetic saved him. This mountain ascetic had known Otoshi in the past, known as Washizo. He now calls himself Taishubou.

　　　Taishubou arrived bearing a letter to become the village's official head priest, but the village already had a mountain ascetic named Gesshinbou. Regardless of whether Oishibou was the official head priest or not, the villagers needed a mountain ascetic with spiritual powers.
