英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'Desire' (1976年、下) に収められた 'Hurricane' (「ハリケーン」)です。

録音は1975年10月24日 (Columbia Recording Studios (Studio E), New York)。

歌詞は Jacques Levy (1935-2004, 下) との共作です。

レヴィは名前からも察せられる通り、ユダヤ人。臨床心理士、演劇の演出家。Roger McGuinn とミュージカル制作をしたことがきっかけで歌を共作しました。マッギンの縁でレヴィと会ったディランが 'Isis' を始めとする 'Desire' に収められることになる7曲を共作します。(*) レヴィはディランの Rolling Thunder Revue の最初のツアーを演出しました。

重要な役割を果たしたジャック・レヴィですが、Martin Scorsese の映画 'The Rolling Thunder Revue: A Film by Martin Scorsese' (Netflix, 2019) では奇妙なことにレヴィがその重要性に見合った扱いがされていません。そのことについて息子の Julien Levy が文章を書いています。重要な曲の共作者であり、レヴューの演劇性を作り上げた人物としての描写がないのです。

レヴィは1993年から2004年まで、ニューヨーク州の Colgate University で英文学教授をつとめ、演劇プログラムの監督をしていました。妻はヴィジュアル・アーティストの Claudia Carr で、ディランが自分の絵の師 Norman Raeben に紹介したところ、レーベンはクローディアの師になりました。クローディアをジャックがディランの 'Oh, Sister' の録音セッションに招き、その後、ふたりは結婚しました。

'Hurricane' は殺人の罪で20年ちかく服役したボクサー Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (下) についての歌です。ディランもレヴィもカーターは無実だと考えていました。ここではリクス校訂版によってこの歌を考えてみます。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Hurricane' は、ジャック・レヴィの助けを借りて、無実と信じるボクサーの物語をドラマタイズした歌。固有名詞などは実名が使われてそのままリズムに乗っている。歌が事実に反するとする主張もある。
