英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月3本目です。歌われる詩の2回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume II' (1971年、下) に収められた 'I Shall Be Released' です(「アイ・シャル・ビー・リリースト」)。

録音は1971年9月24日 (Columbia Recording Studios / Studio B, New York)。

もとは1967年夏に The Basement Tapes のセッションのときに録音されています。その録音はまず1991年の 'The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3' で発表され、のちに2014年にリミックス版が 'The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete' で発表されました。

1971年の 'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume II' のための録音は歌詞を変更しています(もとの1連を削除など)。

ディラン自身が1971年に 'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume II' で発表するまでに、The Band がデビューアルバム 'Music from Big Pink' (1968) で発表しています (ヴォーカルは Richard Manuel, 下)。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'I Shall Be Released' は、本来はつみびとと神との関係をうたう内省的な傑作であるものの、世間では良心の囚人の解放をうたう共同体の賛歌として用いられ、ファンもそのような歌として受取った。ディランは一時的に本来の姿を出そうとしたが、引っ込めてしまった。

1 must need もとの1967年版では 'needs' だった。どちらも他動詞の need「必要とする」［cf. must needs do「どうしても」「必ず」(needs は副詞)］
2 fall 「堕落する」「誘惑に負ける」「転落する」宗教的ニュアンスがある。 例 Eve fell in the Garden of Eden. イブはエデンの園で禁断を破った
3 reflection 「似姿」
4 the wall もとの1967年版では 'this wall' だった。cf. the Wall = the Wailing Wall「(エルサレムにある) 嘆きの壁 (紀元70年にローマが破壊した昔の Solomon の神殿 [the Temple] の西壁、壁の高さは18mある)」→ some place so high above the wall の the wall を the Wall の意味にとれば、神殿、さらにその上方の場所をさすことになる。なお、ボブ・ディランは1983年9月に息子 Jesse の bar mitzvah (成人式) を行うために嘆きの壁を訪れた (下、Jesse は白い肩衣 [tallis, tallit, tallith] をまとった右側の青年)
