英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid' (1973年、下) に収められた 'Billy' です。正確に言えば 'Billy' の公式詩集版です。

録音は1973年2月 (Burbank Studios, Burbank, California)。

映画 'Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid' (米、1973年、下) ［邦題「ビリー・ザ・キッド/21才の生涯」］のサウンドトラック・アルバム。

この西部劇映画は監督が Sam Peckinpah で、Kris Kristofferson がビリー・ザ・キッド、James Coburn がビリーの友人で保安官のパット・ギャレットをそれぞれ演じています。ボブ・ディランもエイリアス役で出演しています。映画の音楽をディランが担当しており、有名な 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' (次回、本マガジンで扱う予定) も含まれます。その音楽の1曲である 'Billy' を取上げます。このサウンドトラック・アルバムには 'Billy 1' と 'Billy 4' と 'Billy 7' とが収められていますが、どれも 'Billy' の全体を含んでいません。

ここではリクス校訂版によってこの歌 ('Billy') を考えてみます。［'Billy' 以外に 'Billy 1', 'Billy 4', 'Billy 7' が、それぞれ別のテクストとして同版で提示されています。'Billy' の通りに唄った録音は知られていません。'Billy' は全体として 'Billy 1' と 'Billy 4' とを合わせたような詩になっています。］

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Billy' は、ビリー・ザ・キッドを描く映画のために作られたこともあって、場面に合わせて部分が切り取られた。歌の全体像は詩集でしか見られない。歌は伝統バラッド 'Billy the Kid' の影響を受けている面もある。
