何に(誰に)仕えているのか?
When elaborating on the main ideas behind his 1989 novel “The Remains of the Day” in several interviews, author Kazuo Ishiguro points out that most of us are morally and politically butlers. That we do our individual jobs to the best of our ability, each serving ‘somebody upstairs’ or some corporation/country/nation/cause, hoping that our contribution is going to be used well. That we struggle to see beyond our small world. But what if, as was the case with ‘Mr. Stevens’ in the novel, someone/something that we’ve been working for turns out to be morally wrong. What if the cause we’ve devoted our lives to is simply unjust.
The road to hell is too often paved with good intentions? And the question would be, what do you do next when you just happen to realize that you too have been such a dedicated ‘butler’ for the past decade(s).
Where do I go from here. Starting from scratch again? Yet this time, I know I can keep putting one foot in front of the other. I have to.
