Carol Sloane, March 5, 1937 - January 23, 2023

1月26日の朝、一通のEメールが届きました。タイトルは “She was a jazz singer. She was a friend.” 送り主は以前の記事でご紹介したStephen Barefoot氏。私が大好きなジャズ・シンガー、Ms. Carol Sloane（キャロル・スローン）の長年のお友達であり、彼女のドキュメンタリー映画 “SLOANE • A JAZZ SINGER” のエグゼクティブ・プロデューサーをなさった方です。

瞬時に何が起こったのかわかりました。悲しさが込み上げるとともになにかこう、私の中で生き続けていた若かりし日々の、人生を謳歌しながら過ごしていたニューヨーク時代の思い出の中でも特に美しい部分のひとかけが幕を閉じたんだなという感覚でした。そして色を失った景色を見るような寂しい思いがポッと胸にわき起こり、深呼吸すると全身に広がっていきました。

このメールはドキュメンタリー映画に使われる楽曲のライセンシング（著作権料の支払い）のために募っている寄付に応じた人々へ送られてきたもので、Ms. Sloaneがなくなる直前の様子も伝えてくれました。2年前に患った脳卒中の合併症で衰弱しながらもドキュメンタリーの公式な公開が決まったのをとても喜んでいるということでした。そして、今月初頭に行われた寄付者を対象とした上映会の後に、彼女の50年間のキャリアで受け取った以上のファンレターが届いたとおっしゃっていたそうです。

Ms. Sloane、あなたの歌声は聴くたびに心に穏やかな炎を灯してくれました。美しい歌声をありがとう。安らかに眠ってください。

Some of you may have read my previous article about Ms. Carol Sloane, the jazz vocalist I loved since I was a grad student at New York University’s music business program (can’t believe it was 20 years ago.) I receeived an e-mail from Mr. Stephen Barefoot, an executive producer of her documentary film, “SLOANE • A JAZZ SINGER” in the morning of January 26. This e-mail was sent to the donors of the film production. The subject read “She was a jazz singer. She was a friend.” As soon as I read the line, I knew what the e-mail was about. The woman, whose warm, calm, and smokey voice always comforted me, has passed away.

I had a couple of chances to hear her live while I lived in NYC, and her music plays a big part in my beautiful memories from those New York days. With the sad news, those memories suddenly seem to lose their luster.

The e-mail from Mr. Barefoot mentioned that Ms. Sloane was excited about her documentary’s official world premier. I wish I could be there!

Ms. Sloane, Thank you so much for your beautiful music. Your singing voice lit the gentle, warm flame in my soul every time I listened. May your soul rest in peace.
