Banana Fish とケープコッドの思い出

僕のマンハッタン観は、 Keith Haring のアートや、高校生の頃にはまった、Banana Chips Love （1991）というフジテレビの深夜ドラマから作れているんですけど、Banana つながりで、Banana Fish （1985～1994）という吉田秋生のマンガがありました。
マンハッタンを舞台に、ストリート・キッズのボスであるアッシュ・リンクスが、コルシカマフィアの大物 ディノ・ゴルツィネとの確執と敵対を軸に、Banana Fish にまつわる陰謀に挑むストーリーが展開されていくハードボイルド的な作品で読み手を選ぶんですが、人の孤独、受容と救済という精神的に大きな命題もど真ん中に扱っていて、３0年近い前の自分にとっては考えさせられる、深い投げかけをもった傑作でした。

Banana Fish という言葉は、作品の中の最大の謎であるある薬物のコードネームを指しているんですが、その名前は、J.D.サリンジャーの短編小説「バナナフィッシュにうってつけの日 (A perfect day for Bananafish) 」からきていて、J.D.サリンジャーのその短編が持っている心の陰的な雰囲気が巧みに作品にも投影されています。

ところで、Banana Fish の主人公アッシュ・リンクスは、ケープ・コッド出身で、作品の最初の方に、ケープ・コッドに身を隠す描写があります。また作品の7年後を描いた後日談である「光の庭」では、登場人物たちがケープ・コッドで当時のことに想いをはせながらも、今を肯定していくシーンが印象的でした。

前置きが長くなりましたけど、ケープ・コッドに行ったんです。爽やかで静かで良い場所でした。美しいリゾート地でもあり、ケネディ一家の別荘は現地の観光名所でもあります。楽天技術研究所のボストン滞在にあわせてまさか自分が来るとは思ってなかったので、ここ最近の、Banana Chips Love の映像クリップを久しぶりに見たり、Keith Haring Art 美術館訪問とともに、Banana Fish の物語を思い出しながら、散歩とクルージングを楽しみました。

My view on Manhattan was developed by art works of Keith Haring and Japanese TV dram "Banana Chips Love (1991)" on which I loved during high school days. On a relaetd note to Banana, I came to remember a classic manga comic written by Akio Yoshida named "Banana Fish (1985 to 1994)." It's set in Manhattan and a charismatic young gang leader named Ash Lynx conflicts and fights against Dino Golzine, a criminal organization kingping of Corsica and struggles to reveal the conspiracy around "Banana Fish". The beginning story of this is much like a hard-boilled detective work, so not everyone seems to love reading it. But, it comes straight to cover mentally the significant theme on loneliness, acknowledgement and salvation of souls. So, it is a masterpiece that was thoughtful and insightful in depth to me about 30 years back.

The name "Banana Fish" which is the code name of a drug, the most mysterious secret in the plot was inspired from the short story A Perfect Day for Bananafish by J.D. Salinger. "Banana Fish" reflected calmly the gloomy atmosphere of that.

By the way, the protagonist Ash Lynx is from Cape Cod. In the early episode, Ash and their friends came back there to hide from Corsica criminal organization. And the later episode on 7 years after Banana Fish named "Garden of Light" has a scene that characters visit Cape Cod, are reminded of that time and accept the now. It was impressive.

I"m making a short story long :-), I visited Cape Cod. It was a very nice place with comfortable and calm breeze. This is also an executive resort, and it's very famous for Kennedy family summer residence as one of sightseeing places. I never thought I came here during my stay in Boston to visit RIT Boston. So while I was reminded that I watched movie clips of Banan Chips Love and visited Keith Haring Art Museum in Kobuchizawa in recent days, I remembered moving stories of Banana Fish and enjoyed walking around and cruising.
