Characteristics of Japanese
Summary of the characteristics of Japanese people. Please use it as a material when talking to people from overseas.
Polite / Obedient
When Japanese people line up in a line, they look for the end and line up there. Few people are openly interrupting.
At the train platform, we line up according to the marks drawn at our feet, wait for people to get off the train that arrives, and then board in order.
✅ When riding a public transport in Japan, you must find a mark indicating a line and wait at the appropriate location.
Shy / Quiet / Indirect / Modest
There is a tendency not to actively appeal about what you are good at and what kind of person you are.
This is because the underlying idea is that if you stand out, you may annoy the people around you.
For example, when we explain something or communicate with someone, Japanese people tend to be indirect. So other people may have difficulty understanding what point he/she wants to make.
✅ If you talk to Japanese people, you need to read between the lines.
Modest
If something succeeds, the Japanese tend to appreciate the help of those around them.
Punctual
Generally, punctuality is considered very important in Japan. Because we have been strictly taught to respect time since childhood. For example, we are supposed to arrive 5 minutes before the meeting time.
Respect for harmony
In Japan, collective action is considered the best. Japanese people tend not to act on their own because they care about the reputation of others. Belonging to large group of people, such as family members, companies, and schools, tend to give you a sense of security. Even if you don't have a completely positive impression, it's good to get along with each other.
Patience
Many people devote their lives to one job, and many people have a commitment and aesthetics, so it is easy to create craftsmen who specialized in a certain field.
Healthy
The average life expectancy of the Japanese male, as of 2012, was 79.94 years and that of female was 86.41. The combined average life expectancy for both Japanese male and female is the highest in the world. This might due to the habit of taking a bath everyday and often eating fish.
Neat / Cleaned /Organized
Schools have time to clean up as part of their education, and the spirit of cleaning their own place has long been cultivated.
