がん。Cancer.

実は先日、私の父の大腸に小さながんが見つかり、今父は手術中です。
まぁ、発見が早かったのと、ステージ１だったので、そんなに深刻ではありません。
腹腔鏡手術なので、時間は４，５時間かかるようですが。
無事に終わるのを祈るばかりです。

Actually, a small cancer was found in the large intestine of my father the other day, and he's under the knife now.
Well, because the discovery was early and it was just a stage I cancer, it is not quite nervous.
Because it's a laparoscopic surgery, it seems to take 4 or 5 hours, though.
I just hope the operation will be completed successfully.

がんは、最近ではもう治らない病気ではありませんが、発見が遅ければ治療も難しくなるだろうし、しかも誰もが罹りえる病気です。
Cancer is no longer an incurable disease these days, but if the discovery were late, treatment would become difficult, and it's a disease that anyone can get.

去年、本庶佑さんという人が、ノーベル医学生理学賞を受賞されました。
本庶さんは、体内の異物を攻撃する免疫細胞の表面に、免疫システムのスイッチとして働くPD-1というタンパク質を発見したんですね。
そしてこの発見は、免疫細胞ががん細胞を攻撃し続けるように、PD-1の活性を阻害するがん治療薬の開発に応用されました。
Last year, Mr. Honjo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
He discovered the protein known as PD-1, which works as a switch for the immune system, on the surface of immune cells that attack foreign matter in the body.
The discovery was applied for the development of cancer drug that inhibits the activity of the PD-1, so immune cells can continue to attack cancer cells.

「風邪引いちゃった」ぐらいの軽い感じで「がんに罹っちゃった」と言って、すぐに良くなる時代が来るといいですよね。
I hope the time will come when we could say “I got cancer” in a light way like “I caught a cold”, and get better soon.
