「英文解釈演習室」に挑戦 2024年2月号
はじめに
毎月、演習室に投稿した訳文について、どんなことをかんがえながら訳したかのメモをまとめて記事にしていってます。演習室に投稿されている常連組の方々にはもちろん、参加していない方々にも読みやすい内容にできたらなぁとおもっています。

今回提出した訳文
この常軌を逸した原子爆弾は、万国の人々を満場一致の道義的な怒りの頂点に奮起させるまでに至った。これまでに怯える根拠をたいしてもっていなかった、おびただしい数の人々が怯えている。地球の住人たちの大部分にとって、この世界はかねてから暮らすには極めて危険な場所でありつづけてきた。とはいえ、それは自然な状態であるとしてなんとか持ち堪えられた。にもかかわらず、戦争のためのあらゆる新兵器の発明は常に恐怖と義憤とをもって迎え入れられてきた。兵器を考案しなかった人々や、最初に脅威にさらされた人々にとっては、特にそうだ。……弓矢、石の砲弾、火薬、フリントロック、ピストル、ダムダム弾、マキシマム・サイレンサー、マシンガン、毒ガス、戦車、そして壮大なクライマックスである広島での実験――証明されるものがあればの話だが――に至るまで延々と。長崎にも原爆投下されたのは覚えておいでだろうか？（中略）元凶となっているのは、はじめに火打ち石から火を起こした人類であり、それからというもの我々はこの日に、この兵器を、こう使うというところまで着実に歩んできたのだ。あなたは代わりに何を助言しただろうか？ 人類は洞窟に座りこみ続け、生肉に齧りついたり、その骨で互いの頭を叩いているべきであったとでも？
それでも、我々がいるのは、今まさに空中分解に瀕している世界ではなく、創造されていない世界かもしれない――それはまだまとまりのない断片で正しく組み立てられるのを待っている。私は思う、我々が何かよりよいものを求めれば、手に入れることができるかもしれない。おそらく我々がすでに支払った代償以上に高くつくことはないだろう。

全体の感想など
言い訳といえばそれまでなのですが、今回はほとんど一日（実質数時間）で書き上げることになってしまいました。
第1パラグラフ前半
1-1 This lunatic atom bomb has succeeded in rousing the people of all nations to the highest point of unanimous moral dudgeon; great numbers of persons are frightened who never really had much cause to be frightened before. 1-2 This world has always been a desperately dangerous place to live for the greater part of the earth's inhabitants; it was, however reluctantly, endured as the natural state of affairs. 1-3 Yet the invention of every new weapon of war has always been greeted with horror and righteous indignation, especially by those who failed to invent it, or who were threatened with it first 1-4 ... bows and arrows, stone cannon balls, gunpowder, flintlocks, pistols, the dumdum bullet, the Maxim silencer, the machine gun, poison gas, armored tanks, and on and on to the grand climax ― if it should prove to be ― of the experiment on Hiroshima. 1-5 Nagasaki was bombed too, remember?
