What does a taxi driver’s workday look like?
I would like to share with you my daily life as a taxi driver.
I have three workdays a week. I work Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is because most taxi drivers work around 20 hours a day. This means that I work two days' worth of work in one day. This is to use one taxi car efficiently.
I wake up at 4 a.m. and after freshening up I go to our office by bike. It takes less than 15 minutes’ walk there. I have to be there by 5 a.m.
On work days I don’t eat at all from until I get home. This is to prevent sleepiness. But I drink plenty of water.
I have to have some preparations such as alcohol check and traffic information to be ready for departure for about 30 minutes and will leave at 5:30. By cab crew rules, we must take a break for about 3 hours. I usually run my car near the Kamata Station. The Kamata Station is about a 20-minute drive from Haneda Airport. I usually pick up about 40 groups of passengers a day. About 80% of them are dispatched by the application, and the rest are either fleet or at the taxi stand at the station.
Around 10:00 p.m., I refuel at the petrol station and then return to the office. I wash the car, prepare the daily sales report for the day, and all work is done by about 11:30 pm. And then I go home and have a meal.
The next day I try to get as much sleep as possible. I have a wife and three children, but I do not take care of them as they are grown. I am very fond of Japanese history, so I spend most of my time reading history books and watching the videos. In the evenings I tutor one or two students and teach math.
Taxi drivers have a lot of leisure time compare to other jobs, so we can devote enough time to whatever they like. We can also take breaks at any time during the work.
