Object or Subject
I read an article the other day by a woman, a professor/researcher, who was studying the sex industry and the objectification of women. She discovered that she, in her work and in her life, was more of an object than the people in the sex industry that she was interviewing. To be an object is to be, according to the article, what others want you to be instead of what you yourself want to be. You become an object and not a subject. I found this article interesting in that it made me think of myself in terms of subject and object. Do I try to be what others think I should be or am I just myself? Aside from that the article began with a basic premise - being an object is a bad thing. But is that premise true? Is it actually bad to be objectified. There is no black and white. You can think in terms of subject and object and find that people are both to some degree. Anyway, it's something to think about. An interesting way to look at yourself.
