LocationMind is a startup focused on AI for location data and satellite intelligence, aiming to understand everything in the world through time and space. Founded in 2019, we bring the cutting-edge research from the Shibasaki Lab (at the University of Tokyo’s Center for Spatial Information Science) to real-world applications. We're now pushing forward with various challenges every day, working toward an IPO in 2026. Recently, we completed our Series B funding, bringing our total to around 4.91 billion yen as of October 2024.
Our Business
At LocationMind, we operate two main business areas: “AI” and “Space.”
AI Business (Location Data Analysis)
We use AI to analyze human flow data and uncover trends and phenomena worldwide. For example, our insights are used to estimate event attendance and help businesses with store location strategies. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, we provided prediction data on infection numbers three weeks in advance. Internationally, we analyze traffic congestion in overcrowded urban areas, as well as infectious diseases like dengue fever and malaria in Africa, which have been present long before the COVID-19 pandemic.
What makes LocationMind unique? Two key points:
Our ability to perform ultra-high precision analysis by using multiple types of location data.
Our access to a wide range of location data sources.
The more data we have, the more accurate our analysis becomes. While LocationMind doesn’t collect location data directly, we partner with various companies that own this data, which allows us to provide highly accurate insights.
Space Business (Location Data Security)
We are also working on positioning security through GNSS signals (better known as GPS). At LocationMind, we own the patent for signal authentication technology, which adds a layer of protection to the otherwise unprotected GNSS signals. This technology enables us to offer services and devices that prevent location spoofing (tampering with location data).
Company Atmosphere
Since LocationMind spun out from a research lab at the University of Tokyo, our company still retains some of that academic vibe. We have a diverse team, including members who first joined us as international students in the lab. Our company has a close-knit culture where everyone, from employees to the leadership team, works together with mutual respect, fostering growth in an open and friendly environment.
Friday Lunch！
Last Friday of every month, we hold a "Friday Lunch!" the company provides onigiri, sandwiches, and other light lunches, followed by a volunteer-led seminar. Topics vary widely—from team members sharing about their home countries to quirky subjects like "What’s the deal with dieting?"—making for a fun and diverse lineup of presentations.
Company Social Events
Once every quarter, we host a company-wide Review Meeting, where we share updates on the projects and progress made during that period. After the meeting, we hold a social event at the office, enjoying sushi catering, fine wine, and lively games, celebrating our hard work in a relaxed atmosphere.
Club Activities
We have two active clubs at LocationMind:Mölkky Club
Mölkky, a Finnish game that’s perfect to enjoy with a beer and a sauna, is gaining popularity in Japan. We practice every Wednesday on the office terrace, where we also take a refreshing break by moving around after lunch. Our LocationMind team even participated in the World Championships held in Hokkaido in August 2024!
Mountaineering Club
Many of our members are map enthusiasts, so our Moutaineering Club fits right in. We enjoy exploring terrain through hiking and mountaineering. We plan all sorts of outdoor activities on the weekends—from half-day hikes and enjoying beer and soba at the summit, to barbecues, fishing, and other fun outings beyond just mountain climbing.

Flexible Working Hours
We offer a full-flex system with a monthly standard of 160 work hours. Most people start their day between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. and finish between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. We have many parents with young children, so they often adjust their schedules to pick up their kids, completing the rest of their work from home.Hybrid Work
Many employees come to the office 2-3 days a week to maintain a good work-life balance. On Fridays, when we host Friday Lunch!, the office gets especially lively with more people coming in.
