Member Interview Vol.3 -Medical AI to solve social issues -
Today, I'm introducing AI team leader, Yuu JINNAI.
-What is your role at Lily MedTech?
AI team is responsible for providing diagnostic data for doctors based on the signals obtained by our hardware. Our major goal is to support doctors. For example, developing a program to indicate area(s) that may include lesion(s) is one of our roles. Our ultimate objective is to reduce sorrows caused by breast cancer. In order to achieve this objective, increasing the breast cancer screening rate by using big data analysis is also one of our roles.
-Could you tell me about your background?
Prior to joining Lily MedTech, I'd been researching for AI at Brown University in the US. I was specialized in reinforcement learning.
When I was a graduate student at the University of Tokyo, I researched a kind of elemental technology to operate supercomputer by AI to maximize its performance. When I was an undergraduate student, I was enrolled at the faculty related to biology because I was interested in biological intelligence and artificial lives. As I continued to study ecology and evolution, I thought studying AI was closer to my interest of "more useful intelligence", and I selected laboratory related to information technology.
-What are your challenges and motivation at Lily MedTech?
Since I was a student, I always wanted to do "something useful" as an engineer, and I was looking for a job I could use of my expertise. That's how I find Lily MedTech. I though start-ups might fit for me more than big companies, and I decided to join LM.
In the future, if the mortal rate of beast cancer declined by 50% because of my research, I could spend my post-retirement age in peace.
-How do you find Lily MedTech?
I can make decisions by myself more than I expected. Before joining the company, I was a bit worried whether I could really contribute and add value to the project or not because I was only a young man in 20's with limited experience in the academic area. To my great relief, my concern turned to be pointless.
On the other hand, as AI team leader, I'm recruiting my team members but it is not easy to define the profile we need and tell appropriate talent from documents.
We are looking for people who's interested in developing useful AI for medical devices.
-Could you tell ma a little bit about your personal life?
I participates in competitions of programming and data science.
I also enjoy card game named "magic the gathering". It is very exciting to play the game while expecting cards that other players may bring.
In addition, I write / translate books for University students.
Thank you so much for may interesting stories. It was very exciting and stimulating interview. Well, he is not a kind of person who takes many photos, but he had lots of photos of cats around the world. The above cars are living in Cambridge, UK.
