Counter 本 - for long and stick-shaped things

Counter: 本(hòn/ bòn/ pòn)

Things to count:
1. Long and stick-shaped things (trees, pencils, bones, fingers, umbrellas, etc)
2. Performances and programs (videos, concerts, radios etc)
3. Things that contain a line and route (trains, buses, phone calls etc)
... This counter is used in a various way that I can’t list up them all, so please remember them one by one when you see some irregulars!

・本数(hoń sùu): the number of (stick-shaped things)

1本(ìp pon)
2本(nì hon)
3本(sàn bon)
4本(yòn hon)
5本(gò hon)
6本(ròp pon)
7本(nanà hon)
8本(hàp pon)
9本(kyùu hon)
10本(jùp pon)

11本(juù ìp pon)
25本(nì juu gò hon)
100本(hyàp pon)
2000本(ni sèń bòń)
30,000本(sań màń bòń)

Tip!

When the number right before the counter is...
1, 6, 8, 10, and 100 - 本(PON)
2, 4, 5, 7, and 9 - 本(HON)
3, a thousand, and 10 thousands - 本(BON)

Examples

・この花3本でおいくらですか?
(konò hànà sànbon de oìkùrà dès(u) ka?)
: How much for these three flowers?
...この(konò): this, these (adjectival)
...花(hanà): flower
...おいくら(oìkùrà): how much (money) (in polite way)
...ですか(dès(u) ka): polite ending words for a question

・ここから東京駅は電車1本で行けます。
(kokòkàrà toùkyòu eki wa deńshà ìppon de ikèmàsu)
: (You) can (directly) go to Tokyo Sta. from here without any transfers.
...ここ(kokò): here
...~から(kara): from/since~
...駅(èki): train station
...電車(deń shà): train
...行けます(ikèmàsu): polite potential form of 行く(ikù): to go

When you’re not confident if something is to be counted with 本, just use ~つ(tsu) or ~個(ko) the common counters!
