【APMAR2024に参加】Wrist-worn Haptic Design for 3D Perception of the Surrounding Airflow in Virtual Reality

はじめに

Hello, this is Rainy from Lifestyle Computing Lab.
This note is for the attendance of APMAR 2024 on November 29th to 30th 2024 at Kyoto, Japan.
This paper was awarded the Best Presentation Award.

研究の概要

This study proposed a wrist-worn device that displays 3D environmental airflow information during VR experience by controlling the rotation of air outlets using servo motors and providing physical airflow using air pumps. Instead of air resistance as the consequence of strong airflow, we focused on reflecting the natural existence of the airflow itself, while maintaining the advantages of wearable devices including being lightweight and convenient to set up. We designed VR scenes to record users’ perception accuracy of airflow in different directions and their level of confidence, and evaluated through a within-subject experiment. Based on the results, we discussed the methods for future advancement of haptic perception as well as possible VR application scenarios.

During the Q&A session, audience asked about how we choose the air source, how the other parameters of airflow (e.g. strength) affects wind perception, and why the airflow display is designed as a combination of two direction control systems instead of one 360° system.

感想

As a first-year PhD student, this was my first time attending an academic conference in Japan, making it a particularly special experience for me. During the conference, I had the privilege of meeting many HCI researchers from across the Asia-Pacific region. I completed my presentation in the first day of the conference. The feedback from audiences has inspired fresh ideas for my work. When listening to others talks, I was impressed by the diversity and dynamism of HCI research in different countries and cultural contexts. The banquet on the first evening was amazing. It was my first time trying traditional Japanese Kaiseki cuisine.

On the second day of the conference,  I was honored with the Best Presentation Award. Hearing the announcement filled me with both happiness and gratitude. It would be a powerful motivation for my future efforts.

This conference has been an enriching experience. I look forward to participating in more academic exchanges like this in the future, collaborating with researchers worldwide to explore new frontiers.
